Arsenal, as well as Liverpool and Chelsea, have been linked with a swoop for Van Dijk.

The player is yet to play for Southampton this season and has handed in a transfer request to help accelerate a move away from St Mary’s.

And the Daily Mail say Arsenal have held talks with Holland international Van Dijk.

It is said the Gunners have raised the idea of a move to the Emirates with Shkodran Mustafi’s future in north London growing increasingly uncertain.

However, Van Dijk himself is said to favour a move to Liverpool.

The 26-year-old came close to moving to Anfield earlier this summer but Southampton threatened to report the Reds for tapping him up.

Consequently, their interest has cooled but Liverpool still harbour hope of winning the race for his signature.

Arsenal, meanwhile, showed in their 4-0 defeat against the Reds that more is needed if they are to finish in the top four.

Van Dijk has made 68 appearances for the Saints since joining from Celtic in January 2016.
