Atletico Madrid are keen to re-sign Diego Costa after the striker made it clear he wishes to leave Chelsea to return to his former club.

The move has been made more difficult due to the striker’s refusal to return to the UK from his prolonged summer break in Brazil.

However, Atletico remain confident of completing a deal for the 28-year-old on deadline day.

And the La Liga giants are reportedly looking to offload Nicolas Gaitan to free up funds for Costa’s arrival.

Journalist Duncan Castles has claimed the Argentina international has been offered to fellow Premier League side Watford.

“Atletico Madrid offer Nico Gaitan to Watford to free up cash for Diego Costa deal,” he tweeted.

Gaitan joined the Spanish side last summer from Benfica but has largely been used as a substitute by Diego Simeone.

The 29-year-old started just 11 La Liga games last term and is reportedly ready to make way for the arrival of Costa.

Speaking earlier this month about his future, Costa said: “My destination is already made.

“I must return to Atletico Madrid. It turns out that there is this impasse that Chelsea does not want to release me.

“But I believe that this situation will be resolved now on my return to Spain.”

The Spanish transfer deadline is 11pm on Friday - a day later than England's which slams shut today.
