Malta v England: Joe Hart should not be No 1, Jack Butland should - Ryan Giggs

JOE HART should no longer be the England No 1, according to Manchester United legend Ryan Giggs.

Hart was once again picked by England boss Gareth Southgate for the World Cup qualifier in Malta tonight.

The West Ham goalkeeper, who is on his second consecutive season out on loan from Manchester City, has had a difficult start to the campaign with the Hammers, conceding 10 goals in his opening three matches.

His recent performances for England have also caused some debate, with many saying Everton’s Jordan Pickford or Stoke’s Jack Butland should get a go.

Pickford had to pull out of the squad earlier this week with a thigh injury but Giggs says Butland should have been given the nod tonight.

“It depends on how the season goes for Pickford, for Butland and for Hart,” he said on ITV.

“Personally I would have played Butland.

"You don’t want to be chopping and changing your goalkeeper.

“What's he (Gareth Southgate) going to learn new from Joe Hart?

“You know he can miss a few games, then come in and he’s got the experience to do what he does.

“I would (have picked Butland), especially in a game like this where you’re not going to see a lot of action.”
