Man City news: Lionel Messi could sign from Barcelona next summer - Paul Mariner

BARCELONA superstar Lionel Messi making a sensational switch to Manchester City should not be ruled out, according to pundit Paul Mariner.

Messi is out of contract at Barcelona at the end of this season and despite agreeing an extension, the forward is yet to sign it.

Manchester City have been linked with a move for the 30-year-old in the past, largely because their manager is Pep Guardiola, but also because they are one of a handful of teams who could afford his wages.

Messi arguably had his best time at Barca under Guardiola, winning three league titles and two Champions Leagues in four years before the Spaniard left in 2012.

Former Arsenal striker Mariner says Paris Saint-Germain could be another option for Messi but a reunion with Guardiola looks a mouthwatering prospect.

In football you cannot rule anything out but Man City’s one destination where Pep Guardiola will welcome Lionel Messi with open arms

Paul Mariner on Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi

“If you look at what he’s got there at the moment and if you think about (Gabriel) Jesus and (Sergio) Aguero and then you throw Lionel Messi in the mix, that’s not a bad forward line,” Mariner said on ESPN FC.

“He’s got some fantastic attacking players, he’s addressed the goalkeeping situation.

“I think we all think Manchester City will be close this season in the Premier League.

“I think they might go further in the Champions League, I’m sure Pep thinks that as well.

“He knows Guardiola, he knows him extremely well.

“In football you cannot rule anything out but City’s one destination where Guardiola will welcome him with open arms.

“But there’s also PSG reuniting him with Neymar and Neymar, Messi and Mbappe, that might be nice.”

Barcelona are back in La Liga action this Saturday against Espanyol at the Nou Camp, whilst City host Liverpool the same day.
