Michael Carrick is expected to be in the Manchester United squad

Carrick, 36, was on the bench for the Super Cup defeat to Real Madrid but is yet to appear in a match squad since.

But, according to the Manchester Evening News, he has travelled to the Bet365 Stadium and should be in the squad for United today.

Carrick took over from Wayne Rooney as club captain this summer but Antonio Valencia has deputised in his absence.

Jose Mourinho’s side are looking for a fourth straight league win and to retain their position in top spot.

United have beaten West Ham, Swansea and Leicester, but Stoke could prove a tougher hurdle today.

"I would say it's always difficult there," Mourinho said.

"Of course sometimes they lose matches but normally it's not easy for anyone to play against Stoke, probably because in the last years United was not strong enough and in my personal case last season we didn't win because we were not good enough, didn't play well enough.

"But they are difficult, they are aggressive, they defend with a lot of people, they are dangerous on counter-attack, set pieces, it's a stadium that has a lot of pressure, too. I think it's going to be difficult again. Hopefully we can be better than in previous seasons.”
