Transfer News: Jose Mourinho made the best signings, Arsene Wenger did not - Joey Barton

MANCHESTER UNITED boss Jose Mourinho was the only manager who signed players in areas that needed strengthening this summer.

That is according to pundit and former Premier League midfielder Joey Barton.

Mourinho spent almost £150million on three new players in the transfer window, as well as re-signing Zlatan Ibrahimovic on a new one-year deal.

The additions of Victor Lindelof, Nemanja Matic and Romelu Lukaku has added depth to each area of the Portuguese’s squad.

Barton was impressed by Mourinho’s summer business and says United’s nearest challengers “forgot the basics of football”, especially Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger.

Arsenal signed just two players in the window in striker Alexandre Lacazette and left-back Sead Kolasinac, despite fans and pundits claiming the centre of defence and midfield needed improvement.

“It seems to be a common thing in football now,” Barton said on talkSPORT.

“Everybody is trying to sign what they don’t need.

“The only one who has signed what he needed was Jose Mourinho

“He’s gone and strengthened right through the spine of his team, he’s strengthened in the centre midfield area, the centre-forward area.

“That spine of the Manchester United side is now looking strong.

“Everybody else, I think they have forgotten about the basics of football, certainly Arsene Wenger

“He’s created some great teams down the years and there was noise about whether he’s going to stay or whether he’s going to go, he decided to stay and give himself a lucrative two-year contract.

“That’s a phenomenal position to be in.”

United and Arsenal start their European campaigns this week, with Mourinho's side facing Basel in the Champions League tomorrow and Arsenal hosting FC Cologne in the Europa League on Thursday.
