ROY HODGSON is back in football as the new boss of Crystal Palace, determined to show that the humiliation of Iceland was only a blip on his managerial record.

Hodgson, 70, will be confirmed as Palace’s new manager today on a two-year, £5m contract – with a million pound bonus written in if he can keep the Selhurst Park club in the Premier League.

Palace sacked Dutchman Frank de Boer yesterday after just 77 days in charge.

Hodgson quit after his England’s humbling by Iceland in the Eurom2016 quarter- finals and has not worked since.

Dutchman De Boer fell out with Palace’s players and the board including chairman Steve Parish over tactics, formations and transfer policy in a disastrous short spell in charge, which saw the team lose all four Premier League games under his command, without scoring a goal.

Hodgson was keen on the Palace job being a former youth player at the club who was brought up in nearby Croydon. He is expected to bring his former England and Fulham assistant Ray Lewington, who also had a spell as a coach at Palace.

De Boer, who became the third shortest serving Premier League manager, said: “Very disappointed about the decision but nevertheless I want to thank the players, staff and the fans for their support. Good luck for the future.”

Hodgson has revealed that he has turned down several offers to return to management since leaving the England job – and also an offer to appear on Strictly Come Dancing.

And last night Sam Allardyce, who saved Palace from relegation last season before stepping down, revealed he ruled out returning to Palace.

Allardyce said he had spoken to Crystal Palace chairman Steve Parish earlier in the day but had no intention of making a quick return to management.

“I spoke to Steve late this afternoon and said, for me, I wouldn’t be ready to come back,” said Allardyce, 62. “I wouldn’t be comfortable at this moment in time taking a position as a football manager. I’m enjoying my life too much at this moment, watching everyone else have the weight of pressure, and there’s certainly huge pressure as we’ve seen with Frank going so early.

“He didn’t offer me the job but he asked, ‘What are your thoughts?’ It was a clever question. I said, ‘If you were to offer me the job at this moment in time, I wouldn’t want to go back’. I wish Crystal Palace all the best, and I’m very sad after all the work we put in last season to rescue the team and get 41 points.”
