Mourinho loving United

22:13: Jose Mourinho was certainly impressed with Manchester United’s 3-0 win over Basel.

He told BT Sport: "Three points are important at home. Until 2-0 we were very stable, we played with confidence.

"After 2-0 everything changed, we stopped playing seriously and stopped making right decisions. We could have put ourselves in trouble.

"We were playing fantasy football, Playstation football. I don't like it, flicks and tricks. We gambled and you have to respect your opponent. I don't know if goal difference will play a part. We lost position, our shape, we lost balls in easy situations. I didn't like it, the players relaxed too much.

"I keep saying the same about Fellaini. He is a player with special qualities and he gives me multiple areas of action. He is one of my most important players."

Champions League: A Celtic fan tried to land a kick on Kylian Mbappe

CHAMPIONS LEAGUE SCORES: Manchester United, Chelsea, Barcelona and PSG win…

Fan tries to kick Mbappe

22:05: It’s been a bad night for Celtic and it could get worse if UEFA decide to throw the book at them after one of their fans tried to KICK Kylian Mbappe.

Celtic could be investigated by UEFA over the incident, which saw a man wearing a green jacket and jeans with a scarf wrapped round his neck come onto the Celtic Park pitch and make an attempt to connect with Mbappe.

Luckily the kick did not land on its intented target and no one was hurt.

A live blog post on BBC Sport said: “A fan comes on to the park and aims a kick at PSG’s Kylian Mbappe.

“The man is dragged away before he can do any damage, but Celtic, who have already had a series of fines from Uefa, could find themselves in big trouble.”

BT Sport presenter Darrell Currie discussed the incident during the half-time analysis with Bhoys legends Henrik Larsson and John Hartson.

He said: “It’s not been a good night so far for Celtic and a fan came on the pitch as well, confronted Mbappe.

“And I can tell you, all the rest of the fans around us were fuming, furious with him going on the pitch.”

AZ: Fellaini was Man of the Match for me. His best ever performance for Manchester United. Never thought I was going to say that!

Bruno: If we can beat Arsenal like this on Sunday I'll go crazy with celebrations! Tonight was just a training match for us the mighty Blues.

Alessandro: Celtic were humiliated. There is no other comment for this match.

21:50: Right then, that was an unbelievably chaotic two hours. Let’s have a quick look at tonight’s results. I guess you can’t say there’s been any surprising results aside from CSKA Moscow’s 2-1 win over Benfica.

Elsewhere Bayern Munich, PSG, Chelsea and Manchester United recorded thumping wins, while Sporting Lisbon edged past Olympiakos and Roma played out a 0-0 draw with Atletico.

CELTIC 0-5 PARIS ST-GERMAIN - CAVANI

86: Ok, it might be the fifth but it’s one hell of a goal. Edinson Cavani meets Kurzawa's curling cross with a sublime diving header at the back post.

CELTIC 0-4 PARIS ST-GERMAIN - LUSTIG OG

83: When it’s not your night… A Mikael Lustig own goal compounds the misery for the Scottish champions. Draxler drilled the ball into the area and the Lustig couldn’t adjust his body quickly enough.

84: PSG are still pushing for a fourth as Mbappe slips it through to Neymar, who blazes wide from an acute angle.

CHELSEA 6-0 QARABAG - BATSHUAYI

82: This isn’t pretty.

Davide Zappacosta does well on the right, surges into the box before laying it off to Michy Batshuayi to score his second of the evening.

MANCHESTER UNITED 2-0 BASEL

CHELSEA 5-0 QARABAG - BATSHUAYI

76: Qarabag giving away goals for free here at Stamford Bridge. Hazard forces a mistake high up the pitch, Bakayoko slipped in Batshuayi who expertly picked out the bottom corner from 20 yards.

CHELSEA 4-0 QARABAG - BAKAYOKO

73: The Azerbaijani side fail to clear their lines from Eden Hazard’s corner and Tiemoue Bakayoko pounces to slam it home via a deflection.

BARCELONA 3-0 JUVENTUS - MESSI

71: Good grief! You simply can’t stop Lionel Messi. He drives into the area before wrong-footing Buffon to give the Catalan side a three-goal lead.

CHELSEA 3-0 QARABAG

70: Willian rattles the crossbar! Hazard, who’s getting a few more minutes tonight, slipped him in, he cut on to his right and thumped an effort against the woodwork, unlucky.

MANCHESTER UNITED 2-0 BASEL

65: It’s pretty difficult to get one past David de Gea. The Spanish goalkeeper’s been relatively untested tonight, but he’s reacted well to tip Elyounoussi’s strike over the bar.

CELTIC 0-3 PARIS ST-GERMAIN

65: It’s been a flat second half over in Scotland. I think Celtic will probably be grateful for that.

MANCHESTER UNITED 2-0 BASEL

62: Romelu Lukaku comes close to adding a third but his header is parried away by Vaclik. The resulting corner comes to nothing.

BARCELONA 2-0 JUVENTUS - RAKITIC

MANCHESTER UNITED 2-0 BASEL - LUKAKU

54: Romelu Lukaku has scored his first Champions League goal. Daley Blind swings a cross in from the left and Lukaku arrives to head home.

MANCHESTER UNITED 1-0 BASEL

53: It looks like Basel are trying to push further forward but despite van Wolfswinkel’s best efforts - it’s not really helping. Saying that, the former Norwich forward narrowly misses a drilled cross from the right flank.

CHELSEA 2-0 QARABAG

50: Zappacosta collects the ball in his own half, and thousands of Chelsea fans shout ”SHOOOOOOOT!!!” He scored a banger but I can’t imagine he’ll be scoring from 60-yards anytime soon.

45: OK, we’re back underway everywhere now folks. It doesn’t appear that Manchester United or Chelsea have made any changes.

CELTIC 0-3 PARIS ST-GERMAIN

HT: Owen Hargreaves on Paul Pogba’s injury: “It was a bit of an awkward movement, just stretching. He clutched that hamstring straight away. He’s just over-stretched it.

“If you think about the quality United have in every position, this is the one player who they haven’t really got a replacement for. He’s a special player already, he will be the heartbeat of that Manchester United midfielder for a very long time. That’s a big blow to Mourinho."

MANCHESTER UNITED 1-0 BASEL

45: Analysis from our reporter Richard Tanner, at Old Trafford.

Mourinho said on the eve of the game he always “felt weaker without Fellaini.”

Well, the much-maligned Belgian has just put United ahead and eased some of the anxiety caused by the loss of the highly-influential Pogba.

Fellaini climbed highest to power home a header form Ashley Young’s cross. And he's just been heralded by the Stretford End - who used to jeer him.

CHELSEA 2-0 QARABAG

44: Qarabag have a rare free-kick in a decent position after Alonso throws Henriquie to the floor. It comes to nothing but that doesn’t stop Antonio Conte from barking something at his players.

CELTIC 0-3 PARIS ST-GERMAIN - CAVANI

40: This is getting a wee bit embarrassing for Celtic now. Simunovic tugs Mbappe back and Edinson Cavani sends the keeper the wrong way to put PSG 3-0 ahead.

MANCHESTER UNITED 1-0 BASEL - FELLAINI

35: Love him or hate him, Marouane Fellaini’s damn effective. Ashley Young's cross finds Fellaini at the back post, who nods into the back of the net.

CELTIC 0-2 PARIS ST-GERMAIN - MBAPPE

34: And one becomes two. It’s pretty poor from Celtic as they fail to deal with a routine cross, leaving Kylian Mbappe free to smash it into an empty net.

MANCHESTER UNITED 0-0 BASEL

33: It’s all getting a bit frustrating for Manchester United. There’s no doubt that they’re dominating proceedings here, but haven’t found the breakthrough.

CHELSEA 2-0 QARABAG - ZAPPACOSTA

30: Urrrrr, Davide Zappacosta has just scored an insane goal at Stamford Bridge. He collects the ball deep inside his own half, strides past a couple of players before rocketing it into the top corner. It’s not too dissimilar to Harry Kane’s against Everton over the weekend, but I think he meant this.

MANCHESTER UNITED 0-0 BASEL

27: Basel win their first corner of the match. It’s swung in deep but it pretty much evades everyone and Ashley Young surges forward.

MANCHESTER UNITED 0-0 BASEL

25: You can’t get much closer without scoring. Henrikh Mkhitaryan hits the post from Romelu Lukaku’s cutback, before the Armenian's second effort is saved by Vaclik.

CHELSEA 1-0 QARABAG

22: Chelsea are having a pretty comfortable time at Stamford Bridge. Qarabag aren’t really capable of causing Antonio Conte’s defence any trouble.

CELTIC 0-1 PARIS ST-GERMAIN - NEYMAR

20: PSG take the lead through Neymar. The Brazilian storms into the centre of the area and lofts the ball into the roof of the net. Scarily clinical from the former Barcelona star.

MANCHESTER UNITED 0-0 BASEL

19: Ouch! Paul Pogba has overstretched to collect a wayward pass and he looks to have pinged his hamstring. That’s terrible news for Jose Mourinho. Looks like he’s going to be replaced by Marouane Fellaini.

MANCHESTER UNITED 0-0 BASEL

15: Should have been the opener. Pogba finds Mata, who curves a cross into the area with the outside of his boot where Mkhitaryan nods over from a few yards away.

BARCELONA 0-0 JUVENTUS

14: Some of the football going on at the Nou Camp is outstanding. Ter Stegen first stops De Sciglio from 25-yards out, and then denies Dybala with a slightly easier save.

CELTIC 0-0 PARIS ST-GERMAIN

12: It might not shock you to hear that Neymar, cavani and Mbappe have combined brilliantly in the early stages, but it’s Celtic with the most recent chance. Roberts finds Ntcham, who’s shot skids wide of the post.

MANCHESTER UNITED 0-0 BASEL

9: Paul Pogba, who’s only scored twice in 32 Champions League matches, looks to break down the right but he’s quickly crowded out. Very well organised defence this from Basel.

CHELSEA 1-0 QARABAG - PEDRO

5: What a hit! It’s defiantly like they never left now! Chelsea have taken the lead over Qarabag with a stunning strike from Pedro.

The Blues played a corner short, Willian found Pedro on the edge of the box and his first-time effort flew into the top corner.

CHELSEA 0-0 QARABAG

3: How’s everything going at Stamford Bridge? It's 553 days since Chelsea last played a Champions League game but it’s like they never left as Alonso has two well-hit efforts on goal.

MANCHESTER UNITED 0-0 BASEL

3: Manchester United boss the early stages at Old Trafford. It’s absolutely lashing it down in the North West but that didn’t stop Romelu Lukaku getting a decent shot away. It was blocked by Akanji.

Celtic have failed to keep a clean sheet in their last 19 Champions League games, conceding 43 goals along the way.

19:30: BT Sport have Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard in the studio this evening. Couldn’t play together but chatting doesn’t seem to be a problem.

Anyway, the former Chelsea skipper’s been discussing Victor Lindelof’s involvement tonight, and thinks he’ll take a little while to settle.

Asked whether Lindelof was a risk, Lampard said: “I think so, there has been a few question marks with him in pre-season. It didn’t go so well for him. I think Jose Mourinho has the luxury of switching it around. I think he’s got a bit of a stronger squad this year, Lindelof having his chance tonight.

“Manchester United are now a club full of confidence. They’ve started the Premier League very well. Their group looks quite comfortable on paper. I expect them with that attacking line-up to create a lot of chances."

19:15: Analysis from our reporter Richard Tanner, at Old Trafford.

It's all change for United's first Champions League game since the notorious defeat to Wolfsburg in December 2015.

Mourinho has rotated his squad and made six changes from the team that drew at Stoke on Saturday - including an entirely new back four.

Antonio Valencia is rested so Ashley Young comes in at right back for his first game since a serious groin injury suffered in the Europa League semi-final first leg at Celta Vigo back in April.

As expected, Chris Smalling and Victor Lindelof are the centre backs in place of suspended pair Phil Jones and Eric Bailly.

And at left back Daley Blind replaces Matteo Darmian. The two other changes see Juan Mata and Anthony Martial come in for Ander Herrera and Marcus Rashford respectively.

Marouane Fellaini, the player who Mourinho cannot imagine not having in his squad, is on the bench after recovering from a calf knock suffered on duty with Belgium.

19:10: Upset with Manchester United’s result over the weekend? Well, Craig Burley thinks it was the perfect preparation for tonight’s encounter.

“They drew with Stoke at the weekend, they tinkered with it a bit, it wasn’t their best performance by a long way,” Burley said on ESPN FC.

“It was a good wake-up call defensively for them for Mourinho to say ‘listen, don’t believe the hype of the first three games, we’ve got a lot of work to do’.

“I think we will see a very professional performance at home to Basel. So Manchester United will win. I don’t think it will be a difficult one. I’d be shocked if it wasn’t anything other than a good start.”

18:20: Ahhh Jose, always a ray of sunshine in our lives.

Having last season missed out on Champions League qualification for just the second time in 22 years, Jose Mourinho has downplayed Manchester United's chances of winning it.

It will be United's first match in the competition for 644 days and appears a great opportunity to hit the ground running, although the Portuguese knows quite a challenge lies in wait in this competition.

"I think motivation is very important and of course motivation is very high. I think in the Champions League there are four or five teams with an incredible level of quality, of experience, of know-how and that's what makes the difference," United boss Mourinho said.

"We have to try to qualify, we have to try to go to the last-16 and enjoy that special knockout phase with the best teams in Europe."
