Atletico has been Costa's first choice ever since he was told he was not wanted at Chelsea this season.

But the Spanish side are banned from registering players until January and have been unable to agree on a fee with the Premier League club.

However, Sky Sports say Atletico are now confident of making a breakthrough with progress is being made in finally getting a deal done.

Chelsea want £50million for Costa and Atletico are yet to offer more than £30m.

Costa is understood to have arrived in Madrid with his family from Brazil on Tuesday after a self-enforced exile.

Earlier today Atletico president Enrique Cerezo played down claims a deal for Costa was close.

He said: "If his family is moving [to Madrid], I do not know.

"What I know is that Costa is a Chelsea player and until January, there is time to talk to his club and with whoever else.

"We are not going to do anything until January."
