Arsenal Cologne: Lukas Podolski wants to play 45 minutes for both teams

Lukas Podolski has split allegiances for the game against Arsenal and Cologne

Arsenal kick off their Europa League campaign at home to Cologne this evening (8.05pm).

The Gunners are heavy favourites for the game, with the German side floundering at the bottom of the Bundesliga.

One man who has particular interest in the fixture is Lukas Podolski, having represented both teams.

And the 32-year-old has admitted he wishes he could play in the tie - but only if he is allowed to do 45 minutes for each team.

“A perfect match tonight, which I wish I could have played,” Podolski tweeted.

“But only if they'd let me play 45 minutes for each team.

"For me it’s a case of two hearts and one chest.

"Everyone knows my club is Cologne, from the youth team to the first team.

"I’m a cologne boy but I had a fantastic three years in London with Arsenal with the fans, with the club and the people."

The Germany legend is currently seeing out his career in the Japanese top flight with Vissel Kobe.

However, he kickstarted his career with Cologne and made 180 appearances in two spells with the German side.

He also spent three years with Arsenal, turning out 82 times for the Gunners in all competitions.

During his time in north London he won the 2013/14 FA Cup.
