Chelsea exclusive: Lukaku better than Morata, Conte needed new left-back - Graeme Le Saux

MANCHESTER UNITED striker Romelu Lukaku is currently better than Chelsea summer signing Alvaro Morata, says Blues legend Graeme Le Saux.

Chelsea star Morata finds the net against Lichtenstein

Chelsea boss Antonio Conte made signing a new striker a priority early on in the summer, having told last season’s top goalscorer Diego Costa he is no longer in his first-team plans.

The Blues were expected to bring Lukaku back to Stamford Bridge from Everton, but he instead opted for a £75million move to title rivals Manchester United.

Chelsea instead broke their transfer record to sign Morata from Real Madrid in a £60m deal.

Morata has eased into to life in the Premier League, scoring three goals and providing two assists in his opening four outings.

While Lukaku has found the back of the net four times in the league.

Graeme Le Saux reckons Romelu Lukaku is better than Alvaro Morata

Le Saux reckons Lukaku is currently ahead of Morata in terms of quality, but is confident the latter has bags of potential.

The former Blues full-back said: “At the moment you might say that Lukaku is the better striker, based on amount of goals scored, but Morata has huge potential.

“A few people in the summer questioned whether he would score goals in the Premier League but he has already proven them wrong which must delight everyone at Stamford Bridge.”

Chelsea spent around £200million on new players during the summer with Tiemoue Bakayokom Danny Drinkwater, Antonio Rudiger, Davide Zappacosta and Willy Caballero joining Morata at Stamford Bridge.

But Le Saux reckons Chelsea should have looked to bring in another left-back to provide support for Marcos Alonso.

The Blues were linked with a number of left-backs, including Porto’s Alex Telles and Juventus’ Alex Sandro, but failed in their pursuits.

When asked where Chelsea needed to improve in the summer, Le Saux added: “I don’t think there’s a specific player

“But the one area where the club could strengthen is left-back.

“That’s not a comment on Marcos Alonso’s ability, I just think they need depth and a bit of cover there.”
