ALAN SMITH believes Chelsea have a stronger team than they had last season as a result of their summer signings.

Gus Poyet: Chelsea are stronger than Arsenal

Chelsea made an auspicious start to the season with a 3-2 defeat to Burnley on the opening weekend.

But they have responded by winning their last four games in all competitions including a 6-0 rout of Qarabag in the Champions League in midweek.

Despite missing out on a number of targets in the transfer window, Chelsea were still among the biggest spenders and all of their signings have made an impact this season.

And speaking ahead of Chelsea’s clash with Arsenal this afternoon, former Gunner Smith was full of praise for Antonio Conte’s team.

So if anything they have moved up a gear, they look a bit stronger than they did last year

He told Sky Sports News: “They are back to what it was last season.

“There’s that intensity back into their play and they have signed well.

“[Alvaro] Morata has come in and scored three goals already in the absence of Diego Costa.

“[Antonio] Rudiger looks a beast of a defender, he just needs to settle into the Premier League.

Alan Smith is a big fan of Tiemoue Bakayoko

“[Davide] Zappacosta got a fantastic goal in the Champions League.

“[Tiemoue] Bakayoko looks another formidable, physical unit who I think he’s going to do really well.

“So if anything they have moved up a gear, they look a bit stronger than they did last year.”
