Premier League table: Man Utd and Man City are currently level

Manchester United beat Everton 4-0 at Old Trafford this afternoon.

But, despite ensuring they match City's goal difference, they STILL are not sitting on top of the Premier League.

The Red Devils have now scored and conceded the same amount of goals as their fiercest rivals after five games.

And that means Pep Guardiola's side are on top solely because of their name.

But would City win the title if the season was to finish now? Sorry Citizens, the answer is no.

A few years ago, there were fears that City and Liverpool would finish with the same goal difference, same goals scored and same goals conceded.

But Manuel Pellegrini's side ran riot against West Ham with two games to go, beating them 6-0.

And that meant there was very little chance of a play-off game happening.

But, had Liverpool managed to keep up with them, then it would have taken place.

Premier League rules state that a one-off game must be played if teams finish with identical records.

"If at the end of the Season either the League Champions or the Clubs to be relegated or the question of qualification for other competitions cannot be determined because 2 or more Clubs are equal on points, goal difference and goals scored, the Clubs concerned shall play off one or more deciding League Matches on neutral grounds, the format, timing and venue of which shall be determined by the Board," the rules say.
