Jose Mourinho says he took tactical risk in Everton win

Everton have mostly played with five at the back this term, a formation made popular by last season’s Premier League champions Chelsea.

Mourinho believes the best way to face a team with five at the back is to deploy the same formation - but the Manchester United boss decided against it in tonight’s visit of Everton.

The Portuguese instead opted to play Marcus Rahford, Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Romelu Lukaku in a front three in an attempt to kill the game.

And his risk paid off, thrashing Ronald Koeman’s side 4-0 at Old Trafford thanks to goals from Mkhitaryan, Lukaku, Antonio Valencia and Anthony Martial.

You have to kill the game and give them little chances

"The Premier League now is becoming very trendy with five at the back,” Mourinho told Sky Sports.

“So the best way to play against that is to play five at the back yourself.

“When you try not to match the tactical system of the opponent, you take risks. So we played with three up top plus Henrikh Mkhitaryan.

“You have to kill the game and give them little chances.

“There was a moment were I felt we did not kill it so we have to make it solid with Ander Herrera. The second goal went in, then game over."
