Jose Mourinho says Everton did not deserve to leave with such heavy defeat

Wayne Rooney suffered a miserable return to Old Trafford as his old club Manchester United thrashed Everton 4-0 with a flurry of late goals.

The 31-year-old, who went back to his boyhood club in July after 13 years with United, wasted two good chances to cancel out Antonio Valencia's stunning early strike for the hosts.

He was substituted late on and then watched United add three more goals through Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Romelu Lukaku and Anthony Martial.

And Mourinho admits it was a rather flattering scoreline for United, claiming Everton did not deserve leave with such a heavy defeat.

The United boss told Sky Sports: ”We started really well.

“Aand in the first 30 minutes were really impressive where we were playing probably our best football since the beginning of the season.

"Everton had a reaction in the second half, we lost a little bit of control. We recovered that.

"We brought some consistency to the game and then I felt we could go with the counter, with Martial for the last minutes for a result that was too much, too heavy for them.

“They don't deserve to go with this result.”

The win lifted the Red Devils level at the top of the Premier League with cross-town rivals Manchester City, with both sides on 13 points and on the same goal difference.
