Manchester City thrashed Watford 6-0 last Saturday, with Sergio Aguero grabbing a hat-trick.

Manchester United meanwhile, enjoyed a 4-0 victory over Everton and they are level on points at the top of the table with City, with an identical goal difference to their bitter rivals.

And Wright thinks United couldn’t afford to slip up as City would start to pull away otherwise.

“Looking at City and how they won, he knows he needs to win that game to stay in touch,” Wright told BBC Radio 5 live.

On United’s progress under Mourinho, Wright added: “I’m very impressed with the way United have progressed with Mourinho.

“He’s under a lot of pressure and people are continuously comparing him and Louis van Gaal’s record.

“He has got players he wants and this is the time we should start judging.”
