Everton transfer news: Chris Sutton lays into Ronald Koeman’s summer business

CHRIS SUTTON has slammed Everton’s summer transfer activity and questioned why the departing Romelu Lukaku was not replaced.

Ronald Koeman has started this season disastrously with Everton

The Toffees finished seventh in the Premier League last season and after spending over £140m in the summer, fans were optimistic.

A poor start to the season sees Everton sit in the relegation zone with just one win from their opening five games.

The only recognised centre forward brought to Goodison Park during the window was Sandro Ramírez in a £5.4m deal from Malaga CF.

“The one thing I find baffling about the whole Everton situation is they have known since March that Lukaku was leaving, and they haven’t replaced him,” Sutton told BBC 5 Live.

“If you spend £140m then in some ways you can understand the fans thinking that you lose the luxury to build and for that to take time.

“I think that’s where the pressure lies and they’re also looking at it and thinking ‘you’ve bought a lot of number 10s there but we don’t have a central striker’.

“Who’s fault is that? Is it Ronald Koeman or is it Steve Walsh? I don’t know. He came with such a big reputation, Steve Walsh - a superb recruiter.

“If you’re that superb, and you’ve known since March you’re main centre forward is going, well?”

Lukaku has made a blistering start to his Manchester United career scoring six in six games, including a goal against his former side on Sunday.
