Liverpool news: Emile Heskey makes call on Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain’s position

ALEX OXLADE-CHAMBERLAIN’s position at Liverpool should not be an issue, according to former Reds striker Emile Heskey.

Oxlade-Chamberlain signed for Liverpool from Arsenal for an initial £35million on transfer deadline day.

The main reason the England international left the Gunners was due to his desire to play in central midfield, a position he was not playing at the Emirates.

His first three appearances for the Reds all came as a substitute in Premier League matches against Manchester City and Burnley and the Champions League draw with Sevilla.

Oxlade-Chamberlain was handed a full debut against Leicester in the Carabao Cup tonight, starting on the right of a front three.

Heskey says his attributes suit playing on the wing but at Liverpool he can roam through different positions.

“I think in this Liverpool side they inter-change that much it doesn’t really matter where he starts off playing to be honest with you,” Heskey said on Sky Sports ahead of the Leicester match.

“Everyone knows him from playing on the wing and getting up and down that wing.

“He’s got so much pace, he frightens defences.

“That’s where everyone thinks he should play.

“He thinks he should be playing in midfield to try and create things for the forwards.

“But he can inter-change a lot, so he can end up on the left, he can end up in the middle.

“That’s the way Liverpool play.”
