But Everton will ensure the money is put to good use, according to the Liverpool Echo.

The award-winning Everton in the Community scheme will be the primary beneficiaries from Rooney's latest indiscretion.

The scheme aims to use the power of sport to motivate, educate and inspire people within local communities to improve their life chances.

Oscar-winning actress Judi Dench became an honorary patron of Everton in the Community in 2012.

Rooney, 31 was banned from driving for two years on Monday and ordered to perform 100 hours of unpaid work as part of a 12-month community order.

The striker, who is reportedly trying to convince wife Coleen not to divorce him, was also ordered to pay £170 when he appeared at Stockport Magistrates' Court.

He subsequently issued a statement which read: “I want publicly to apologise for my unforgivable lack of judgement in driving while over the legal limit. It was completely wrong.

“I have already said sorry to my family, my manager and chairman and everyone at Everton FC.

“Now I want to apologise to all the fans and everyone else who has followed and supported me throughout my career.

“Of course I accept the sentence of the court and hope that I can make some amends through my community service.”

The court head that Rooney was close to being three times the legal limit when stopped by police.

A breathalyser test showed his alcohol level was 104 microgrammes in 100ml of breath. The drink-drive limit is 35 microgrammes.

Rooney missed two good chances when Everton were thrashed 4-0 at his former club Manchester United at the weekend.
