Man Utd news: Romelu Lukaku urges supporters to stop ‘racist’ chant

ROMELU LUKAKU knows Manchester United fans "meant well with their songs" but hopes everyone can move on from chanting Kick It Out called "racist".

Lukaku has swiftly established himself as a fans' favourite since joining from Everton in the summer, thanks in no small part to six goals in as many games.

The Belgian powerhouse already has a couple of chants in his honour, although one to the tune of the Stone Roses' Made of Stone has caused controversy as it references the size of his penis - a song the striker hopes will stop.

"Great backing since I joined #MUFC," he was quoted as saying on the club's official Twitter account.

"Fans have meant well with their songs but let's move on together. #RespectEachOther.”

The song led anti-discrimination body Kick It Out to call for action against the "racist" chant.

United posted on social media ahead of last night’s Carabao Cup match against Burton that "action will be taken against any offensive behaviour", reminding supporters of the club's commitment to inclusivity.

Former Red Devils star Paul Ince has disputed the fact it’s offensive and said: “Personally, I don’t think the chant is racist.

“I honestly think it’s a group of fans that have got carried away and did not expect the backlash they have got. I’d say it’s just a bit of fun, that’s got out of control now.

“For a player to hear that sung about themselves, I do think they’d think it was amusing, a bit of a laugh.

“If this chant was being sang at me when I was playing, I would just laugh it off and that would be it.

“Fans have sung chants for years and far worse than that in my time, though I suppose a lot of them would have never been heard because of social media.

“I don’t think Romelu Lukaku would say it was racist.”
