Harry Kane has dominated the Premier League scoring charts for three years

Tottenham striker Kane was the only England player on the 55-man shortlist for the Fifpro World XI.

Shilton racked up 125 caps for England and played in three World Cups in an amazing international career.

And he believes Kane, 24, has all the attributes to become one of the best players in the sport.

“Our one bright light is Harry Kane who’s on the verge of breaking into the world football stage,” Shilton told the BBC.

“And quite rightly so, because the progress he’s made over the last couple of years is fantastic.

“He’s still got a way to go, but we [England] have just got to keep raising our standards."

Shilton played over 1000 games for clubs including Southampton and Nottingham Forest in a career spanning over 30 years.

And he stated his dissatisfaction with the current standard of players within the England squad.

“It’s disappointing that we haven’t got players that are competing for these awards,” he said.

“But maybe that says a lot about where we’re at with the England team at the moment.

“We need to find players that can play at that level and show the required consistency and ability.”

The three finalists for the 2017 Ballon d’Or are Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, and Paris-Saint Germain's Neymar.

Messi and Ronaldo have won the last nine votes between them - the Real Madrid talisman claiming four wins to the Barca striker’s five.
