"I don't know what happened," he claimed.

"Craig (referee Pawson) told me to leave, and I left.”

The Manchester United manager said he hadn't asked the ref for an explanation, adding: "He told me to leave, I left.”

Mourinho claimed his players struggled in the end to hold onto a 1-0 win at Southampton because they tired in the south coast sunshine.

And he refused to hail them as title challengers - at the moment.

The Manchester United boss added: “It's too early. I know that last season on this fixture I think we would have, maybe, five or six points less than we have this season. So we are better this season than last.

"But this is nothing. It's just a start. A difficult period with an accumulation of matches, that comes in October. Difficult. I really think that six teams are going to fight for the title.”

"It is not always possible to operate at high quality but we fought hard."
