A POINT apiece kept both sides comfortably ahead of gloomy pre-season predictions after this dreary stalemate at Turf Moor.

The result appeared to hinge on whether Chris Wood, the home side’s £15million striker, could find a finish from a selection of half-chances but he was shackled by Terriers centre-half Christopher Schindler.

The first half was a largely clumsy affair but Schindler was an obvious standout, throwing his body at a couple of shots.

Huddersfield’s only real attempt prior to the break saw Elias Kachunga spray high and wide from 25 yards but they bettered that within three minutes of the restart, when Laurent Depoitre’s

shot was beaten out by Clarets keeper Nick Pope.

Huddersfield substitute Rajiv van La Parra dragged one shot across Pope but the Dutchman was also guilty of some sharp practice when he tumbled to the floor in search of a penalty against Matt Lowton, who did not make contact.

Referee Christopher Kavanagh was not fooled and cautioned Van La Parra.

Huddersfield manager David Wagner said of the incident: “I was too far away, not able to see it. It was very quick. If it was a dive, it’s not what we want to see.”

Burnley manager Sean Dyche said: “My only gripe is that they have to change the rules about retrospective diving. If they got a penalty from that and he scores, he gets banned. Because they didn’t get a penalty, nothing happens.”
