Jesus, 20, was hot property across Europe during his time at Brazilian side Palmeiras.

But it was Manchester City who snapped him up in a £28million deal with Pep Guardiola convincing him to move to the Etihad.

However, life could’ve been very different for the Brazil international.

German outlet Kicker claim rivals had the chance to sign the youngster for just £22m in the summer of 2016.

It is said Jesus had a clause inserted into his contract at Palmeiras which allowed United to have priority over signing the striker and should a bid be lodged the Brazilian side were obligated to accept.

But Kicker say United along with Real Madrid, Barcelona and Bayern Munich failed to come forward with an offer, which opened the door for  to sign him instead.

Jesus has been a shining light for City since joining up with the squad in January.

He did suffer an injury which curtailed his progression, but in the 15 Premier League appearances he has made so far he has scored an impressive 11 goals.

City take on Shakhtar Donestk next in their second Champions League group stage match tonight at the Etihad (7:45pm).

And ahead of the game Guardiola heaped praise on Jesus for his ability to link-up with Sergio Aguero.

"Now we have five strikers I trust," Guardiola said.

"There is no doubt about his ability, his impact since he arrived, on and off the pitch. I am delighted with him.

"He helps Sergio to score goals, in our pressing and dynamism and fighting, in a lot of things that maybe we didn't have. With him, we have it. He is so important.

"The most important thing is age. He is so young and a number nine striker from Brazil. He trains every day and fights every game and has the desire to become a really good player in world football."
