Diatta, 18, plays for Norwegian club Sarpsborg 08 and is regarded as one of the most promising youngsters in Europe.

All-action midfielder Diatta is Sarpsborg’s prized asset and they handed him a new four-year deal in February.

The teenager duly signed it but this will not stop United from making a move if Mourinho gets positive feedback from his coaching staff.

Diatta has previously admitted he’s open to a move to one of Europe’s giants.

He said: "I'm young and just have to work hard. It's a dream for me to play to play in the big leagues.

"But now I'm in Sarpsborg and I love this club. Then we'll see what's going on in the future."

United have delved into the Norwegian market before.

The Red Devils signed an unknown Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in a £1.5illion deal from Norwegian outfit Molde in 1996.

Solskjaer went on to become part a United legend, scoring in the Champions League final to help them win the treble in 1999.
