So Mourinho’s options are limited in the middle and he admits he has a difficult choice.

He said: “We don’t have Fellaini, we don’t have Pogba, we don’t have Carrick. They are all missing for this match.

“So the solutions are not many, but we try not to focus on individual battles or in specific areas on the pitch.

“We try to focus on the globality and we try to have a team with quality, balance, to try and win the match, which is our objective.”

United beat Basel in the first game and will move into pole position with another three points tonight in Moscow.

But they are also without Phil Jones so Victor Lindelof will get another test after his £29m summer move to Old Trafford.

And it looks like United have gone three at the back with Lindelof, Eric Bailly and Chris Smalling and Ashley Young and Daley Blind as wing backs.

Nemanja Matic and Ander Herrera are in midfield with Romelu Lukaku flanked by Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Anthony Martial.
