ARSENAL teenager Reiss Nelson will be treated like Robin van Persie was during his early days at Highbury.

Real Madrid target Reiss Nelson shows off outstanding skills

That is the opinion of pundit and former Arsenal centre-back Martin Keown.

Keown was speaking ahead of Arsenal’s Europa League clash away to Bate Borisov tonight, where Nelson started.

In his first few first-team appearances, the attacking midfielder has been occupied as a wing-back by boss Arsene Wenger.

The 17-year-old impressed on the Gunners’ pre-season tour to Australia and China in a role further forward.

Keown says Van Persie was played out of position by Wenger when he first arrived at Arsenal.

He says Wenger plays players out wide in order to enhance there defensive capabilities.

Arsene Wenger does that for their development,” Keown said on BT Sport.

“If you think back to Van Persie, he played in a wide position and then become a central figure, (Samir) Nasri they did the same.

“You can think of quite a few actually who have played in wide positions and not gone into central positions.

“But to start with, learn your trade, your defensive responsibilities, in a wide position.

“We’re going to see what he’s got tonight.”

Nelson lasted 79 minutes against Bate, as the Gunners won 4-2.
