Jack Wilshere insists he is still keen to play for Arsenal and Arsene Wenger

The midfielder started his first European game for nearly three years and turned in a first-half display in particular that was a reminder of his potential before a series of injury problems stopped his career virtually in its tracks.

After spending last season on loan to Bournemouth, he now has just eight months left on his contract and time is fast running out for him to prove he still has a future at the Emirates.

“Do I see myself staying? Of course I do,” Wilshere said.

“I have always been at Arsenal, I love this club.

“They have been good to me over the years and I have a great relationship with the boss. He has played me since I was 17.

“He has put his trust in me since then. We have a great understanding and of course I want to stay.

“But it is not the right time for me or the club to discuss anything. I am back training, it has been a while, and I am enjoying it. I enjoy working with these top players again.

“I was sat in the hotel last night thinking and I couldn’t remember the last time I played a European away game for Arsenal. It was maybe three years ago. I am enjoying it.

“I am fit and healthy and getting back to my best and when the time comes to sit down and talk, or not, we will see.”

Jack Wilshere is likely to drop back down to the bench for Sunday's game with Brighton

Wilshere could come back down to earth with a bit of a bump when he most likely finds himself back on the bench for the Premier League game at home to Brighton on Sunday as Wenger looks to rest those who suffered the punishingly long trip to Belarus.

“As a player you want to be in every game, especially when you have been injured, but at the same time, I understand they have been winning and playing well,” Wilshere said.

“Am I 100 per cent back? Maybe not. I felt good in the first half and start of the second and then fitness-wise it started to go a bit towards the end.

“But that is natural and normal. I have only played two full 90 minutes. It will come and I am patient at the moment and we will see where I am in three or four weeks.”
