Manchester City manager and former Barca boss Guardiola also called on Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy to answer questions after violence broke out during Catalonia’s unofficial independence referendum.

More than 750 were injured as security forces used rubber bullets and baton charges as they clashed with protesters in Barcelona.

Amid the rising tensions, Barca tried to get Sunday’s La Liga game postponed but after the Spanish League rejected their request, played behind closed doors and won 3-0.

“I wouldn’t have played it at all,” said Guardiola.

"But if it had to be played, then do it with the public there – with all the consequences.

“The images don’t lie, there were people who wanted to vote, not rob a bank, and they’ve been attacked with violence.

“Spain will try to hide the reality but the world’s media will show it.

“The Prime Minister must give answers.”
