Arsenal News: Man Utd were offered Mesut Ozil by Real Madrid before Gunners transfer

MANCHESTER UNITED were offered the chance to sign Arsenal midfielder Mesut Ozil during his time at Real Madrid, reports claim.

Manchester United are being linked with Ozil as uncertainty over his Arsenal future continues to rumble on.

The Germany international’s contract with the Gunners expires next summer and the chances of him signing a renewal are slim.

Reports have said that Jose Mourinho is keen on a reunion with the World Cup winner, having previously worked with Ozil at Real Madrid.

But the Daily Mail say he would already be plying his trade at Old Trafford if not for former Manchester United manager David Moyes.

The Scot succeeded Sir Alex Ferguson in 2013 and immediately set about imposing his style on the club.

But his hesitancy in the transfer market cost the club dearly, with Moyes famously ending up with just Marouane Fellaini in a summer that had seen the Red Devils pursue Cristiano Ronaldo, Gareth Bale and Cesc Fabregas.

And the Daily Mail say United were offered the chance to sign Ozil on deadline day four years ago.

The Germany star was forced out of the Bernabeu after Real wrapped up a deal for Bale, who arrived from Tottenham.

However, Moyes stopped the midfielder from signing.

Instead, United’s loss proved to be Arsenal’s gain with Arsene Wenger signing him for a huge £42million.

That made him the club’s most-expensive player, though Alexandre Lacazette is now the proud owner of that mantle.

Arsenal could let Ozil leave the club in January despite the 28-year-old being widely regarded as one of their best players.

Wenger is keen to sell the German in the New Year to avoid losing him for nothing next summer.
