Zlatan Ibrahimovic has been battling back from a long-term knee injury he picked up in last season’s Europa League clash with Anderlecht.

The 36-year-old has made good progress and is believed to be targeting a return before the New Year.

And Old Trafford legend Andy Cole has provided fans with an update on the Swede, posting a photo of the pair in the gym together.

The Instagram post was accompanied with the caption: “Good morning my new gym partner.”

Ibrahimovic is looking in good shape but specialist Dr Freddie Fu warned this week he should not be rushed back.

"He is very strong but soccer is still a combative sport," he told Chinese media.

"As a doctor, of course I want to see him return as slow as possible, only when he is fully fit for the game.

"There have been many cases of a player returning prematurely with bad consequences.

"I have no worry about his injury as it always takes time to fully recover."

Cole has also been battling back to fitness himself after picking up a virus which caused his kidneys to fail.

The condition led to the former striker gaining weight and he admitted last year he was finding it difficult to cope with.

“Putting on all the weight has been the toughest part,” Cole told BBC Sport.

“When I retired, I promised my kids I will never put on weight because when [footballers] retire they eat and drink.

“Seeing the change in my body, that has been tough, it wreaks havoc with yourself.”
