MARCUS RASHFORD should play in a more central position if he is to fulfil his potential.

Rashford's goal for Man United against Burton Albion

That is the view of former Arsenal defender-turned-pundit Martin Keown.

Rashford, 19, put in an impressive performance for England as they snatched a 1-0 win against Slovenia thanks to an injury-time goal from Harry Kane.

This victory sealed the Three Lions’ place in the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

was deployed on the left side of attack, a role he has been playing in for Manchester United this season.

But Keown reckons he should be playing in a more central position rather than out wide if he is to reach the level of stars like Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi.

I think he will be a top player, and they don’t stay fixed for too long out wide

“I like the way Marcus Rashford runs at people and asks questions of defenders,” Keown told the Daily Mail.

He added: “All the best players — Gareth Bale, Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi, started as wingers at some point and Rashford just needs to go a bit more central and express himself more off the touchline.

“I think he will be a top player, and they don’t stay fixed for too long out wide.

“Outside left should be his starting position only when it comes to the World Cup.”

Rashford has scored six goals for club and country so far this season.

Up next for England is a clash with Lithuania on Sunday October 8 (5pm).
