Lithuania v England: Harry Winks selected because there is no one else - Ryan Giggs

TOTTENHAM ace Harry Winks was only selected for England tonight because there are very few options for manager Gareth Southgate.

Harry Winks 'over the moon' about goal on full league debut

That is the view of pundit and Manchester United legend Ryan Giggs.

Winks made his international debut for England, starting in central midfield against Lithuania in the final World Cup qualifier.

The 21-year-old has only made four starts in the league for Tottenham since his debut last year.

But with only 34 per cent of those who started in the last round of Premier League eligible for England, Southgate has not got a wide pool to choose from.

It’s obviously not like a club job where you can go out and ‘I need a creative midfielder, I’ll go and buy one’

Giggs is concerned England’s players are not getting exposed to as much high-level football as they need.

“It’s obviously not like a club job where you can go out and ‘I need a creative midfielder, I’ll go and buy one’,” he said on ITV.

“He (Gareth Southgate) has got to rely on what he’s got.

“We said that about the Under-20’s, winning the World Cup.

“How many of them are actually playing and exposed to top-flight football?

“The highs and lows of top-level football, where you get criticised, where you’ve got to come through it.

“That’s probably the same with Harry Winks tonight.”
