Man Utd news: Roberto Martinez talks Romelu Lukaku’s fitness and Jose Mourinho’s concerns

ROBERTO MARTINEZ says Romelu Lukaku is “100 per cent fit” as he is set to include him in Belgium’s qualifier against Cyprus later tonight.

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho will be left fuming if Lukaku aggravates his ankle niggle in what is a dead-rubber for Belgium, with their place at Russia 2018 already secured.

The striker has bagged 10 goals in nine games for United this season and missed Saturday’s qualifier against Bosnia & Herzegovina with an ankle injury.

But Martinez explained: “The reason that he wasn't in the squad in the previous game was because he wasn't 100 per cent.

“Now he is 100 per cent but we need to take into consideration that he has been with the group for only one [training] session."

Martinez added: “Romeu Lukaku is fit. We are in touch with Man United’s medical team.

"I haven’t received a phone call from Jose Mourinho as yet.”

The 23-year-old passed a late fitness test before his last outing for United against Crystal Palace, but then picked up the ankle knock during the game, in which he netted his seventh league goal of the season.

According to the Manchester Evening News, Mourinho wants constant dialogue with regards to his striker’s welfare - but that doesn’t seem to have been the case.

The Portuguese manager is already without Marouane Fellaini, Paul Pogba and Michael Carrick for the trip to Anfield on Saturday, and losing his star striker would compound his injury woes.
