Man Utd News: Meulensteen delights in Forlan and O’Shea goals at Liverpool

RENE MEULENSTEEN has been reminiscing about goals from Diego Forlan and John O’Shea for Manchester United against Liverpool ahead of the two teams’ Premier League clash on Saturday.

Manchester United go into tomorrow’s game against Liverpool aiming to continue their fine start to the new season.

In recent years, Juan Mata and Wayne Rooney have given Red Devils fans reason to cheer over in Merseyside.

But former coach Meulensteen has recalled goals from Forlan and O’Shea in 2002 and 2007 respectively.

Manchester United supporters still sing about the two strikes, both from players who have their own cult status over at Old Trafford.

And Meulensteen understands why.

“I can remember Diego Forlan scoring twice (in 2002), John O'Shea in the last minute (2007) and Rafael scoring (2007)," he told ESPN.

"Yet we also went through a spell where we struggled to win there.

“Liverpool were so pumped up -- their fans and their players -- and that helped them.

“They will be on Saturday, yet I'm confident that United can do well."

Forlan's brace came on a cold December afternoon.

Man Utd News: John O'Shea broke Liverpool hearts in 2007

The Uruguayan had the Red Devils soaring after capitalising on Jerzy Dudek's mistake.

And they proved to be vital with United going on to win the title in 2003.

As for O'Shea, meanwhile, and his decisive intervention was also memorable.

Paul Scholes had been dismissed for throwing a punch at Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso.

But O'Shea struck late to give 10-men United a famous win.
