Liverpool news: Jurgen Klopp was right about controversial referee decision - Murphy

JURGEN KLOPP was right to say it was a “clear penalty” when Ander Herrera appeared to bring down Philippe Coutinho in the box in Liverpool's 0-0 draw with Manchester United.

That’s according to Match of the Day and former Liverpool star Murphy.

Liverpool were frustrated in their efforts to break down a resolute Manchester United side yesterday as the two sides played out a 0-0 draw.

Joel Matip had Liverpool’s best chance of the game in the first half when David De Gea sensationally denied him from close range with an instinctive save with his feet.

But Klopp said after the game his side should have been given an opportunity from 12 yards in the second half when Herrera appeared to make contact with Coutinho in the box resulting in the latter hitting the deck.

Not many Liverpool players protested the decision by the referee not to give a penalty.

But Murphy believes Klopp was right to question the decision.

“This is a penalty, Jurgen Klopp is right,” Murphy said on Match of the Day.

“Herrera dives in and they got lucky there.

“We had to look a few times to be fair.”

The goalless draw was a carbon copy of last season’s fixture at Anfield and Klopp once again lambasted Jose Mourinho’s tactics suggesting he would not accept that same mentality at Liverpool.

He said: “They came for a point and they got it.

“You could not play this way at Liverpool but it’s okay for Manchester United. It was obvious they had a more defensive approach. They are happy. We are not happy. They were okay for a point, we wanted three.”
