Liverpool had been desperate to land defender Van Dijk during the summer as Jurgen Klopp looked to solve his defensive woes. 

However, Southampton stayed firm in their insistence the Dutchman would not leave the club. 

And after failing to secure a move to Anfield, Van Dijk made his first start at St Mary’s this season during their clash with Newcastle. 

However, the centre-half looked lacklustre and lethargic against the Magpies.
