Man Utd news: Jose Mourinho must improve his form against his rivals to win league, says Carragher

Carragher was discussing Manchester United’s 0-0 draw with Liverpool on Saturday.

Mourinho has been criticised for the performance, but Carragher understands why the Red Devils played like that.

“First of all I should say I have no problem whatsoever with what Jose Mourinho did,” he said on Monday Night Football.

“He’s always done it, I expected it before the game. Jurgen Klopp said afterwards Liverpool could never play like that.

“Well maybe his Liverpool could never play like that, my Liverpool did and we did it plenty of times and got results off the back of it.

Man Utd news: Jose Mourinho has a poor recent record away to the so-called top six

If that doesn’t improve, they won’t win the league and that’s when the criticism will come

Jamie Carragher on Man Utd boss Jose Mourinho

“I think the criticism will be saved until the end of the season if results in big away games don’t improve and it costs them, Manchester United, the title.”

Jamie Carragher then revealed a graphic, as seen above, which revealed a damning statistic about Mourinho.

In his last nine games against the so-called ‘top six’, three at Chelsea and six at United, his side has only scored one goal and have not won.

Carragher says that must change this season or United can forget about winning the title.

“I want to look at this graphic,” Carragher continued.

Julien Laurens: PSG and Mourinho have already spoken

“The last nine, he’s scored one goal. Now Jose Mourinho has always been lauded and rightly so as the man for the big occasion, the man in a big game, Mourinho masterclass, winning these games.

“His way of late is not working, it’s not.

“I want to go back to possibility Peter (Schmeichel) when you were playing and you were going for titles with Manchester United and you possibly had six big games in terms of Liverpool home and away, Arsenal home and away, and someone else challenging whether it was Chelsea or Newcastle. That’s 18 points.

“I think with the top six now, that’s 30 points, that’s a big part of the season, so you’ve got 10 games, home and away.

“If that doesn’t improve, they won’t win the league and that’s when the criticism will come.”
