THAT’S ALL FOLKS

22:20: That’s all from me tonight. I’ll be back again tomorrow to bring you LIVE coverage of Benfica vs Manchester United and Chelsea vs Roma. Two more epic clashes that’ll leave me knackered! Night.

22:15: Spurs keeper Hugo Lloris: "I think we were better in first half than second half, they pushed to the end, but we had good chances to score. It was a good draw.”

22:10: Tottenham striker Harry Kane: “We are happy. Of course they are going to have chances but we played well and made it tough for them. A point at Bernabeu, you would take that every day of the week. It shows how far we have come as a team.

“It puts us in a great position and we play them again in a fortnight. It shows we can handle it at this level and that what it is all about."

22:07: When will Benjamin Mendy’s reign as King of Twitter end? I’ve embedded one of his tweets above, but it would take around six days to show you them all!

22:06: Manchester City defender Kyle Walker: "We knew they would come at us in the second half but the lads showed good character. Ederson has kept us in it."

22:05: Manchester City defender John Stones: "A lot of runners in behind. We knew they played patient football and had attacking threat. We knew it would be tough but we wanted to play our football. At times it was great to watch. I am upset to concede the goal we did but overall a great team performance.

"We have out ourselves in a good position. There are a lot of games to play still This was g odd test to see where we are at."

22:00: Rio Ferdinand on Hugo Lloris’ performance: “That man there in the picture, Hugo Lloris with a couple of great saves. Commanding performance from him and he marshalled that back five in front of him for the whole game. Listen, you have to ride your luck at times here when you play in the big stadiums.

“Real Madrid were probing here and there but I think this Spurs team looked comfortable at times defending, looked confident in what they were doing. That’s a testament to Pochettino and the way he set his side up.”

21:55: Manchester City: Top of Group F, Liverpool: Top of Group E, Tottenham: Top of Group H, Manchester United: Top of Group A, Chelsea: Top of Group C.

Needless to say, Premier League clubs are doing very well indeed.

21:50: Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah: "I think it was a great game, we did good, it was an important result for us and we have to keep looking forward. The team did good, we had a good result and that is the most important thing.

“I’m very happy, now we have to concentrate on improving the results in the Premier League and keep on moving forward. We had bad luck in the last three or four games. Everyone was confident a good result was coming."

ELSWHERE IN EUROPE…

21:45: I’ve posted a picture of tonight’s results above folks. Mainly because I’m too lazy to type them out.

As you can see there were some big upsets tonight. Sevilla, Porto, Monaco all tasted defeat, while Dortmund dropped more points.

21:40: Massive boost coming from Cyprus. APOEL have managed to hold Borussia Dortmund to a 1-1 draw. That leaves Spurs and Real Madrid as extremely strong favourites to qualify for the next stage.

MANCHESTER CITY 2-1 NAPOLI

FT: Pep Guardiola’s side survive a late scare to take all three points against Napoli. Cracking result for Pep’s men.

REAL MADRID 1-1 TOTTENHAM

FT: They’ve done it folks, Tottenham have earned themselves a fantastic draw against European champions Real Madrid. Full reaction to follow shortly.

92: Tottenham back in a really good shape which forces Lucas Vazquez to go for an ambitious pass, that rolls straight out of play.

91: There’s only going to be one winner now folks. Real Madrid are now piling forward in search of a winner, and now they have a corner… Hugo Lloris claims it.

THREE MINUTES ADDED TIME

90: Another change for Spurs as Moussa Sissoko goes down with cramp. Son replaces him for the closing stages.

MARIBOR 0-7 LIVERPOOL

FT: Liverpool dispatch Maribor with absolute ease. I hope you’ll always remember where you were when Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain scored his first Liverpool goal…

Real Madrid vs Tottenham LIVE: Latest Champions League scores, news and highlightsREUTERS

MARIBOR 0-7 LIVERPOOL - ALEXANDER-ARNOLD

89: It’s seven. Right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold marauds forward and smacks it past the keeper.

88: Alderweireld, Vertonghen and Sanchez have been brilliant tonight. They’ve just two minutes plus injury time to keep the door locked. Isco off for Lucas.

MARIBOR 0-6 LIVERPOOL - OXLADE-CHAMBERLAIN

86: Good grief, is that a misprint? No? OK, well Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain has scored his first goal for Liverpool in this 6-0 rout. The England international produces a neat finish to give Liverpool a record-breaking away win in Europe.

84: You get the sense this is the calm before the storm. There’s an element of concern from both sides, and the tempo has slowed down.

81: Here comes Danny Rose! The left-back, who’s been sidelined since January, replaces Fernando Llorente. The Spaniard worked his socks off tonight.

79: Benzema off, Asensio on... Now this kid is scarily good at just 21-years-old.

77: Eriksen… nope. The attacked meets Fernando Llorente’s flick-on, but Navas stays big to claw it into the side-netting. Should have crossed it to the lurking Harry Kane.

75: Unbelievable save! Navas has somehow kept Harry Kane out with a terrific reflex save to tip the striker’s curling effort wide of the post.

MANCHESTER CITY 2-1 NAPOLI - DIAWARA

73: Game on at the Etihad! Diawara slots a penalty into the bottom-right after tired challenge on surging Ghoulam by Fernandinho.

72: B****cks! Borussia Dortmund have equalised…

71: There a chance for Spurs here… if they’re brave! Real Madrid are leaving themselves wide open at the back, but Spurs haven’t capitalised yet because they aren’t prepared to commit numbers forward. Twice Moussa Sissoko has plundered forward and got beyond the Real Madrid defenders, but nobody’s with him!

70: Welcome news from the other sides playing in this group. APOEL are somehow 1-0 up against Borussia Dortmund. If it stays like this, Real Madrid and Spurs will have a four-point lead over the pair.

69: I don’t want to slate Christian Eriksen because we all know what a fine player he is. Although I will say that he’s struggled tonight. Not looking himself with plenty of passes going wayward. Spurs giving the ball away at will.

66: Mauricio Pochettino has his three experienced substitutes warming up on the sidelines. I wouldn’t mind seeing Danny Rose unleashed against this lot. Bags of energy when he’s at his best.

64: Hugo Llorus to the rescue again as he tips Ronaldo's fierce effort over the bar for a corner. Decibel levels rising at the Bernabeu. The corner collected by the Frenchman.

63: Tidy stuff from Sanchez. He calmly clears Isco’s cross with Karim Benzema lurking just behind him. Kroos then follows that by dragging an effort wide.

Real Madrid vs Tottenham LIVE: Latest Champions League scores, news and highlightsREUTERS

Real Madrid vs Tottenham LIVE: Latest Champions League scores, news and highlights

60: It’s all Real Madrid now. The Spanish champions are pressing high, forcing Lloris to kick it long and they’re winning every second ball. Spurs under pressure.

57: OH. MY. WORD. Hugo Lloris take a bow! The French goalkeeper somehow claws Karim Benzema’s header from point-blank range. Think David de Gea’s on Saturday and it’s pretty much the same.

MARIBOR 0-5 LIVERPOOL - FIRMINO

54: I think the floodgates opened about 45/50 minutes ago, and Maribor haven’t been able to stem the flow. Roberto Firmino grabs his second of the evening after glancing a drilled Coutinho free-kick beyond the keeper.

54: Well played Harry Kane. The striker drives forward but nobody’s with him. He holds it up and eventually wins a corner. Eriksen whips it in but Ronaldo rose highest to clear. He’s everywhere that kid.

51: Danger. Harry Winks pulls Casemiro back and Real Madrid have themselves a free-kick a few yards inside the right touchline. Kroos delivers… Benzema stretches but there’s no power on his header.

48: Quite an inexperienced bench for Mauricio Pochettino to choose from this evening. Trippier, Rose and Son look like the only options really.

REAL MADRID 1-1 TOTTENHAM

45: OK, we’re back underway folks. No changes at the break. More of the same please!

Richard: Just seen the Spurs denied penalty appeal. Stinks of the ref being scared to give it again Real if you ask me.

Rob: Aurier's short career at Spurs has been characterised by stupidity so far. Which tallies with his off-the-field history.

Andrew: How could one team be allowed such blatant cheating ? These refs don’t even try to hide it!

REAL MADRID 1-1 TOTTENHAM

HT: Some disagreement in the BT Sport studios with Glenn Hoddle trying to argue that it wasn’t a penalty. OK, Kroos was already on the way down, but Rio Ferdinand and Frank Lampard think differently. The point is Serge Aurier didn’t need to go to ground!

45: Zinedine Zidane’s side really want an advantage before the break. Spurs are pinned inside their own half as Marcelo makes a few yards before sending a decent cross into the six-yard box. Lloris smothers.

REAL MADRID 1-1 TOTTENHAM - RONALDO

43: Cristiano Ronaldo levels the scores from the penalty spot, obviously. The Real Madrid star sends Lloris the wrong way. Really frustrating for Poch, who’s side arguably looked worth a half-time lead.

PENALTY TO REAL MADRID

42: Heartbreak for Spurs as Aurier needlessly goes to ground to tackle Kroos. Just seen the replay and it’s a stonewall penalty for me. Stupid tackle from the Frenchman, who's looked vulnerable defending.

MANCHESTER CITY 2-0 NAPOLI

41: Bit of drama at the Etihad. Kyle Walker is adjudged to have fouled Insigne, and the referee points to the spot. Mertens, who made the Ballon d’OR nominations list, makes a hash of it by rolling it straight at Ederson. Rubbish spot-kick.

MARIBOR 0-4 LIVERPOOL - SALAH

40: A brace for Mohamed Salah. The Egyptian superstar prods the ball home after some good work from Alberto Moreno down the left. It’s too easy for Jurgen Klopp’s side.

39: The backlash has arrived. real Madrid have started to tick with Alderweireld forced into a last-ditch block to deny Ronaldo. Seconds later Karim Benzema heads a lofted cross narrowly wide.

36: Talk about these Galacticos showing their class, what about Harry Winks?! The youngster looks so assured on the ball and tenacious without it. Very impressive display. Marcelo goes close with an angled drive but Sanchez makes a vital block.

33: Cristiano Ronaldo is in trouble. There’s a bit of after between him and Vertonghen, and the Portuguese gives him a small whack on the back of the head. Booked.

REAL MADRID 0-1 TOTTENHAM - KANE

27: Spurs have scored, this is not a drill! Serge Aurier bursts down the right flank before cutting it inside for Harry Kane, who improvises with an audacious flick, that deflects past Navas via Varane’s boot.

I think it’s going down as an own goal, but I doubt Mauricio Pochettino will care. Tottenham lead at the Bernabeu.

27: Tottenham turn defence into attack in a matter of seconds. A Real Madrid corner is cleared and Sissoko charges forward. He eventually finds Harry Winks, who sets himself before skewing one wide from just outside the penalty area.

Real Madrid vs Tottenham LIVE: Latest Champions League scores, news and highlightsREUTERS

24: Very promising couple of minutes from the visitors. Navas fumbles a Harry Kane header before Casameiro poked it away. A few shouts for a penalty because it looked like he caught Llorente. Nothing given.

MARIBOR 0-3 LIVERPOOL - SALAH

21: This is silly. Liverpool are absolutely demolishing Maribor in their own back yard.  This time it’s Mo Salah who’s found the net.

20: A whisker away! Cristiano Ronaldo surges forward in vintage fashion. Alderweireld ushers him away from goal, but the Portuguese makes himself some space before shooting just wide.

17: Spurs fans won’t like hearing this, but Modric has Eriksen in his back pocket in these opening stages. The home side are dominating possession and have come closest through Ronaldo. Still no breakthrough though.

MANCHESTER CITY 2-0 NAPOLI

Analysis from our reporter Richard Tanner, at the Etihad.

16: And we haven't had to wait for goals. City are two-ups and they've been made and scored by the usual suspects.

Sterling living up to his pre-match vow to get into the box and score more goals. He finished off a typically flowing city move, Fernandinho, Sane and Silva were all involved and Sterling pounced - with his left foot - after Walker’s attempt had been blocked.

That’s eight for the season now just three short of his personal best for the season and we’re only in mid-October. Who else but the majestic De Bruyne made the second with one of his slide-rule passes to put it on a plate for Jesus.

Napoli have looked pretty decent but what team can live with City at the moment.

MANCHESTER CITY 2-0 NAPOLI - JESUS

15: This is getting silly now. City making Napoli look like a pub team. Kevin de Bruyne rinses his marker down the right flank, and squares for Gabriel Jesus to tap home from close range.

MARIBOR 0-2 LIVERPOOL - COUTINHO

13: One becomes two. No messing around from Jurgen Klopp’s side tonight. All business. Salah and Milner combine and Coutinho's volley flashes past Handanovic.

Real Madrid vs Tottenham LIVE: Latest Champions League scores, news and highlightsREUTERS

Real Madrid vs Tottenham LIVE: Latest Champions League scores, news and highlights

MANCHESTER CITY 1-0 NAPOLI - STERLING

10: Raheem Sterling again?! The winger is on fire this season and stuck a rebound away nicely after some good work between David Silva and Leroy Sane. Advantage Pep.

9: Ronaldo is playing right up against the Tottenham back three tonight. He’s trying to find the space behind Jan Vertonghen.

6: Woodwork! How have Real Madrid not taken the lead? Cristiano Ronaldo heads a cutback onto the post, before Karim Benzema fired the rebound wide. There’s your warning, Spurs. I don’t think they’ll be spurning too many more like that.

MARIBOR 0-1 LIVERPOOL FIRMINO

4: Liverpool already asserting their dominance. Roberto Firmino has given them the lead inside five minutes after Salah raced away and crossed for the Brazilian to tuck it away.

3: Slight delay ahead of kick-off as both teams observed a minute's silence after the tragic recent events in Galicia. Spurs enjoying possession in the opening stages, but the second Isco won the ball back it was panic stations.

REAL MADRID 0-0 TOTTENHAM

1: Here we go then. Probably Tottenham’s toughest European test under the lights at the Bernabeu. Buckle up, this is going to be epic! We're underway.

THE FINAL COUNTDOWN

19:43: Not long until the Champions League anthem will blare out around Europe. I intend to sing it at the top of my lungs in the office. The 3917 travelling Spurs fans will be doing the same. Doubt City supporters will be. They don’t half hold a grudge!

MANCHESTER CITY V NAPOLI

Analysis from our reporter Richard Tanner, at the Etihad.

19:40: Everyone here is licking their lips in anticipation of a repeat of City’s last 16 clash with Monaco in the Champions League last season.

That ended 5-3 in one of the most entertaining matches of the season. And with 71 goals shared between these two clubs already this season, don’t expect a goal-less stalemate.

Napoli have made the best start of any team in the major European leagues. Eight wins out of eight just shades City's seven wins and a draw. Not surprisingly, Guardiola has kept the same team that swept aside Stoke 7-2 on Saturday.

Underlines City’s attacking strength that they can afford to keep Aguero on the bench. No rain in Manchester for a change so they are heavily watering the pitch.

RIO: KANE IS AUDITIONING

Analysis from our reporter Lewis Winter.

19:35: Tottenham’s Harry Kane is auditioning for a potential move to Real Madrid in this evening’s clash at the Bernabeu, according to Rio Ferdinand.

Kane has started the season in scintillating form for Tottenham and has been linked with a mega-money switch to Real Madrid in recent days.

Real boss Zinedine Zidane yesterday labelled the Englishman as the ‘complete centre-forward’.

Ferdinand says it is a big night for Spurs but even bigger for their talismanic striker.

“This is what the Spurs team, the manager, the staff, the fans, this is what they’ve been wanting in the Champions League. Big, big games against great teams, huge history at Real Madrid. This is a great audition really, it seems, if you look at the media, for someone like Harry Kane,” he said.

“If he’s ever thinking about leaving a club like Spurs, where he’s the golden boy, where he’s the son of the old White Hart Lane, this is the type of game he wants to play in and produce his best football.”

CONTROL

19:25: For all the sub-plots on offer, there is also a Champions League group to be won and the victors will be in a commanding position to claim top spot.

Tottenham and Madrid look like runaway leaders, each six points clear of Borussia Dortmund and Apoel Nicosia, but Dortmund now face a double header against the Cypriot minnows and could quickly surge back into contention.

A point would represent an excellent result for Spurs, but they also have a point to prove, having struggled in the Champions League last year.

They certainly cannot afford a thrashing.

STUPID THEORY

19:20: Call it what you want, and many have deemed it stupid, but I have a theory about predicting results.

I always find myself looking at the Champions League Youth Team results, and then predicting the same for the senior side.

Liverpool won 4-1 against Maribor, Manchester City won 3-1 and Real Madrid drew 1-1 with Tottenham.

Stick that in an accumulator and you’ll get some retirement monies. 1815/1. I know, I know, I’ll go to gamblers anonymous tomorrow…

MARIBOR V LIVERPOOL

19:15: Can Loris Karius convince?

That’s the question perhaps three people in the country are asking. As ever, I’m here to cater for the few…

The German has been designated Champions League goalkeeper by Klopp but his performances so far have done little to vindicate the manager's faith.

He was criticised for not reacting quickly enough to the free-kick which allowed Spartak to take an early lead in Moscow last time out which put his side under pressure.

He’s going to need a confident display in order to prevent more questions about his suitability for such high-profile games.

PLEASE GOD!

19:10: Mauricio Pochettino would like to manage England one day.

I’m not sure the poor guys knows what he’s getting himself in for.

The highly-rated Tottenham boss has told a new book that should he ever make the move to the international stage, the Three Lions would appeal to him.

In the book 'A Brave New World', serialised in the Daily Mail and charting Tottenham's 2016/17 title challenge, he says: "If I were to be an international manager one day, I'd relish the opportunity to coach the England national team.

"I've heard that I've been considered for the job before, but I don't know if there was any truth in it. I'd be reunited with loads of familiar faces: Harry Kane, Danny Rose, Dele Alli, Eric Dier, Adam Lallana."

No mention of Kyle Walker I notice…

DON’T SHOOT THE MESSANGER!

19:00: Harry Kane has been priced at 6/4 to make Real Madrid his next club.

Real are said to be plotting a £150m move next summer, but reports suggest Tottenham will demand £200m for the England international. It comes after Real Madrid coach Zinedine Zidane hailed Kane as the "complete player" ahead of their Champions League clash.

What do you think? Will Harry Kane leave Spurs or take inspiration from Francesco Totti by remaining a one-club legend?

REAL MADRID vs TOTTENHAM

18:50: Let’s have a closer look at the starting XI’s at the Bernabeu tonight.

It certainly looks like Poch is going for it. Handbrake off and all that as he opts for a 4-4-2! Mike Bassett would be proud.

Jan Vertonghen is starting at left-back, the creative Harry Winks starts in midfield alongside Eric Dier, while Spurs have two in attack with Harry Kane and Fernando Llorente.

Danny Rose is back after 1,400 years injured. Does that mean Christian Eriksen and Moussa Sissoko will operate on the flanks?

MANCHESTER CITY V NAPOLI

18:45: Pep Guardiola's side have been in outstanding form in the early part of the season. Just ask any of the poor manager’s they’ve thrashed.

Saturday's 7-2 demolition of Stoke took their goal tally to 37 in 11 matches in all competitions. As well as Stoke, Liverpool (5-0), Feyenoord (4-0), Watford (6-0) and Crystal Palace (5-0) have all been crushed.

But Shakhtar Donetsk, even though they lost at the Etihad Stadium, did find a way to frustrate City in their last Champions League outing. They also had opportunities that could have led to a different outcome had they been taken.

And Napoli aren’t exactly the kind of side who refuse to eat their dinner, if you know what I mean.

REAL MADRID vs TOTTENHAM

18:40: OK, here’s the moment you’ve all been waiting for. Mauricio Pochettino throws us a curveball by starting Fernando Llorente AND Harry Kane. Danny Rose is also back on the bench.

Tottenham XI: Lloris (C), Alderweireld, Vertonghen, Sanchez, Aurier, Sissoko, Dier, Winks, Eriksen, Kane, Llorente.

Subs: Vorm, Foyth, Trippier, Rose, Walker-Peters, Georgiou, Son.

Real Madrid XI: Navas, Ramos, Varane, Ronaldo, Kroos, Benzema, Modric, Marcelo, Casemiro, Achraf, Isco.

Subs: Casilla, Nacho, Theo, Lucas, Llorente, Asensio, Ceballos.

MARIBOR V LIVERPOOL

Liverpool XI: Karius; Alexander-Arnold, Matip, Lovren, Moreno; Milner, Wijnaldum, Can; Salah, Firmino, Coutinho.

18:32: Pep Guardiola clearly not underestimating Napoli tonight. Strong side on display…

Manchester City XI: Ederson; Walker, Stones, Otamendi, Delph; De Bruyne, Fernandinho, David Silva; Sterling, Gabriel Jesus, Sane.

Subs: Bravo, Aguero, Gundogan, Danilo, Yaya Toure, Mangala, Bernardo

Napoli XI: Reina; Hysaj, Albiol, Koulibaly, Ghoulam; Zielinski, Diawara, Hamsik; Callejon, Mertens, Insigne.

Subs: Sepe, Allan, Jorginho, Maggio, Maksimovic, Rog, Ounas

MARIBOR V LIVERPOOL

18:30: I’ve already stuck my neck on the line and said that Liverpool will walk this tonight.

I might live to regret that considering Liverpool's last away win in the Champions League came against Debrecen in November 2009…

Maribor, who are second in the Slovenian PrvaLiga, are in decent form having gone 14 games unbeaten - but they have not won any of their seven home matches in the Champions League group stage.

18:28: We should be getting those starting XI’s any second now folks. I’ll bring it your way as fast as my sausage fingers can type.

18:26: Video of Tottenham arriving at the Bernabeu above. Harry Kane gone without the jacket on this chilly evening. Power move?

REAL MADRID vs TOTTENHAM

18:25: So the good news is that Gareth Bale has been ruled out through injury, the bad news is Luka Modric will want to prove a point.

Modric has blossomed into perhaps the finest midfield playmaker in the world since then and he will be keen to remind Tottenham of his talents.

Spurs will hope their own new possession king Mousa Dembele is passed fit to start. It would make a fascinating battle in the centre of the park.

SHAKEY GONE

18:20: I’m sure you’ve heard the news that Craig Shakespeare has been sacked by Leicester having won only one of their eight Premier League games this season.

Monday: Ophelia, Tuesday: Shakespeare. The week is going from bard to verse…

Rumbled! Obviously that jokes far too advanced for my brain. I pinched it from Francis Keogh, who clearly didn’t waste his time at University sipping VK’s in Oceana until 4am…

ELSEWHERE IN EUROPE

18:15: We’ll also be bringing you all the latest from the matches involving Liverpool and Manchester City.

Jurgen Klopp’s visit to Maribor should be pretty straightforward, he says fully knowing the vast quantity of egg that could be on his face later.

But Napoli’s trip to the Etihad is a totally different kettle of fish.

Napoli have been as dominant in Italy. Maurizio Sarri's side have a 100 per cent record after eight games in Serie A, scoring 26 goals along the way and conceding just five. Their only blemish this season came in their Champions League opener against Shakhtar Donetsk, which they surprisingly lost 2-1.

EVENING…

18:10: Welcome to our LIVE coverage of the mouth-watering clash between Real Madrid and Tottenham at the Bernabeu.

I don’t think I’m alone in thinking that tons of matches have been overhyped recently, and they’ve failed to deliver.

*Thinks about Liverpool vs Manchester United on Saturday*

But something tells me tonight will be different as Spurs travel to Madrid to battle with Cristiano Ronaldo and the rest of the Galacticos.

Two insanely talented sides, two fantastic managers and, of course, Harry Kane taking on professional wind-up merchant Sergio Ramos on his own patch.

Should be a cracking night!
