Hugo Lloris refuses to blame the referee after Tottenham’s draw against Real Madrid

TOTTENHAM star Hugo Lloris admitted he was a bit surprised Real Madrid were awarded a penalty, but refused to blame the referee for the decision.

Mauricio Pochettino’s men boosted their hopes of qualifying for the knockout stages of the Champions League after a this evening.

Raphael Varane gave Spurs a shock lead when he inadvertently turned Harry Kane’s flick into the back of his own net in the 28th minute.

Real, however, levelled proceedings two minutes before the interval when Cristiano Ronaldo drilled home his spot-kick after Toni Kroos was felled by Serge Aurier in the area.

And while stopping short of criticising the referee, Lloris was a bit bemused as to why Los Blancos were awarded a penalty.

“I don't know. I was a bit surprised but we have to trust the referee,” Lloris said. 

“But we stayed strong and they put on a lot of pressure, we could have faded. We deserve this point."

However, Lloris was pleased with Spurs’ overall showing.

He added: “I think we were better in first half than second half, they pushed to the end, but we had good chances to score.

Spurs now top Group H on goal difference, with seven points from three games.

In the other match, Apoel Nicosia picked up a point against Borussia Dortmund at home.
