Liverpool news: Jurgen Klopp must improve his defence to challenge for the title, says Henchoz

Liverpool have never won the Premier League in its 25-year history.

Their hopes of putting an end to that this season look like they have already gone, with them sitting nine points off of Manchester City at the top after just eight games.

Liverpool’s defence has come under severe criticism of late and Henchoz says improving the centre-back area is a priority in upcoming transfer windows.

“They are a great team to watch,” Henchoz told talkSPORT.

In the centre of defence Liverpool definitely need somebody. That must be the priority for Jurgen Klopp in January

“Going forward, there is no problem. The problem is defensively, you cannot win titles or even challenge for titles when you concede so many goals, it’s as simple as that for me.

“Can Liverpool challenge for the title? To be honest with you, I don’t think so at the moment, unfortunately.

“Manchester City and Manchester United just started so well, so at the moment I can’t see that happening, no.

“For me, the top four would still be a good achievement this season.

Liverpool news: Jurgen Klopp's side are not good enough to win the title yet, says Henchoz

“Hopefully they will qualify for the last-16 of the Champions League and try to go as far as they can in the FA Cup, but I don’t think they can challenge for the title.

“The back-four needs some new players, in the centre of defence they definitely need somebody.

“That must be the priority for Jurgen Klopp in January.”

Liverpool are back in Premier League action this Sunday when they travel to Wembley to face Tottenham (16.00).
