Paul Scholes: Henrikh Mkhitaryan to blame for Romelu Lukaku dip at Man Utd

ROMELU LUKAKU’S slide in form at Manchester United is partly down to Henrikh Mkhitaryan.

That is the verdict of Paul Scholes.

Lukaku’s dry spell in front of goal continued last night despite Manchester United beating Benfica 2-0 in their Champions League group game.

An own goal and a Daley Blind penalty ensured United consolidated their position at the top of Group A.

However, Lukaku has now gone five games in all competitions without finding the net.

And former United star-turned-pundit Scholes thinks the lack of service and support from the likes of Mkhitaryan hasn’t helped the Belgian.

Discussing Lukaku’s dip, Scholes told BT Sport: “He has to demand it himself.

“He might be short on confidence. He should push everyone out of the way and say ‘I’m getting on the score sheet’.”

Speaking about Mkhitaryan’s role, Scholes added: “I think the criticism came from the Liverpool game where his hold-up play wasn’t great.

“I don’t think Mkhitaryan helped him and he hasn’t had much support since then.

“He has to be strong and use his frame and he does have to get better, but he does need support as well.”

Lukaku will hope to rediscover his goalscoring touch when United travel to face Chelsea on Sunday (4.30pm).
