Arsenal news: Chris Sutton launches scathing attack on Theo Walcott

THEO WALCOTT was handed the captain’s armband for Arsenal’s Europa League match against Red Star Belgrade last night, but Chris Sutton was less than impressed with the decision.

Despite a drab 0-0 draw against the Serbian side, Arsenal secured progression to the knockout stages.

Wenger made a number of changes with Reiss Nelson, Joseph Willock, Ainsley Maitland-Niles, Edward Nketiah and Matt Macey in goal all given a chance to shine.

Olivier Giroud, Jack Wilshere and Walcott occupied the attacking roles for Arsenal.

Wilshere came closest for the Gunners towards the end as he saw his effort cleared off the line and Giroud was guilty of missing a couple of guilt-edge chances.

But Walcott came in for heavy criticism by Sutton who was irate at seeing the England international being handed the captain’s armband.

“He hasn't improved anywhere near enough,” Sutton said on Eir Sport.

“He burst onto the scene at Southampton and I think he's flattered to deceive for years.

“And, how uninspiring must it be for the Arsenal players seeing him, as captain, leading you?

“He's not captain material. The 10 other players are far more captain material than him.

“I’m really disappointed with him, he's a choker, he doesn't want to show for the ball.”
