Man Utd news: Zlatan Ibrahimovic return could RUIN Romelu Lukaku - Paul Merson

ZLATAN IBRAHIMOVIC’s impending return from injury could have a profound effect on Romelu Lukaku’s Manchester United career.

That’s according to Paul Merson, who claims Lukaku is the kind of player who doesn’t take criticism well.

The Belgium international failed to score in United’s 2-0 win over Benfica on Tuesday night, meaning he has not found the net in his last six games.

He made a fast start to life at Old Trafford following his summer move from Everton, scoring 10 goals in nine games.

But his recent drought has left some United fans looking ahead to when Ibrahimovic will return to action.

If Zlatan Ibrahimovic was there, he wouldn't be untouchable

The Swede was a huge success in his debut campaign last year before picking up an injury towards the back-end of the season.

However, he is expected to return to action in the New Year and with Jose Mourinho opting for a system with just one centre forward, it leaves the question on who will get the nod between Lukaku and Ibrahimovic.

Mourinho offered some words of support to his current first-choice striker this week, claiming he was ‘untouchable’, but Merson believes that will all change when Ibrahimovic is available.

"If Zlatan Ibrahimovic was there, he wouldn't be untouchable,” Merson said on Sky Sports’ The Debate show.

"It would be very interesting as the crowd would be roaring for Ibrahimovic, which would put pressure on Mourinho and then Lukaku might go into his shell.

"He's a confidence player - you need to put your arm around him. You don't want to be having a go at him.

“That's why Mourinho is telling him he's untouchable."
