Virgil van Dijk has opened up on his future at Southampton

Van Dijk submitted a transfer request after Liverpool had seen approaches rejected.

Jurgen Klopp made him his No1 target as he looked to shore up his defence and refused to move for a back up.

That has led to suggestions Liverpool will have another go in the future.

And Van Dijk was coy when quizzed on the situation.

“Firstly, I don’t think it’s appropriate to comment on anything that happened before,” he said to the Daily Echo.

“But I am giving 100% for the club. I work hard every day, I help my team-mates, I’m positive and I want to win every game.

“I am happy and that’s the most important thing so we will just see what happens.”

Given: Liverpool needed a plan B after failing to sign Van Dijk

Van Dijk missed the start of the season with injury but has returned to the Southampton side now.

The 26-year-old has made five Premier League starts with Southampton in 13th place after 11 games.

Liverpool have conceded more goals than anyone else in the top eight and sit fifth, 12 points off league leaders Manchester City.
