Mourinho had water squirted at him, was doused in milk and was hit on the head by an empty plastic bottle, which the home players believe was thrown by the opposition goalkeeper.

Witnesses said some players tried to swing punches while police looked on in disbelief.

Both Pep Guardiola and Mourinho did not elaborate too much on the incident in press conferences on Tuesday.

Guardiola spoke first and said: 'What happened (after) hopefully won’t happen again.

'The situation at Old Trafford when you go to the home locker room you have to pass the away one, but we were inside celebrating.

‘It wasn’t anything exceptional. It was what we did last season in the past and what we will do in the future. But always we respect our opponents because we go on the pitch.

‘The images can speak for themselves, what happened after the game, David Silva shook the hands of the opponents and then went to the fans in front.'

Mourinho refused to be drawn on what Guardiola had said only moments before he faced the press but still criticised City's conduct after the match.

'He says, he says. I'm not here to comment on his words,' Mourinho retorted. ‘The only thing I can say is that for me it was just a question of diversity, diversity in behaviours, diversity in education, just that and nothing more than that.’

City's victory meant they extended their lead atop the Premier League table to 11 points over second-place United.

Guardiola's men play last-place Swansea on Wednesday night and curiously took the short flight out to Wales on the day of the game, rather than arriving the day before and staying in a hotel.

Swansea head into the match off the back of a 1-0 victory over West Brom on Saturday.

United, meanwhile, host Bournemouth.
