Referee Foy should take blame for Ramires' Villa red card, says Chelsea boss Mourinho

Jose Mourinho has claimed referee Chris Foy was partly to blame for the shocking tackle by Ramires on Karim el Ahmadi.

Ramires was sent off by Foy during the final seconds of Chelsea’s defeat by Aston Villa on Saturday and will be banned for games against Arsenal, Crystal Palace and Stoke in the Barclays Premier League.

Mourinho was unimpressed with his Brazilian midfielder for a show of indiscipline but insisted the officials must shoulder some responsibility for allowing frustration to build up.

‘I am angry with Ramires, but you know, in football, it’s difficult to keep control of the emotions,’ said Mourinho.

‘There are persons in the game that are responsible to help the players to control the emotions and sometimes these people are the people that push the players to lose their control.

‘I can’t separate the Ramires tackle — which is a red card — from the accumulation of frustration during the match.

‘What happened in minute 92 was a consequence of the other 92 minutes played before that.

‘So for me, is it a red card? Yes, it is a red card. He made a mistake and he’s going to pay for the mistake.’

Ramires has been a controversial figure this season. He was booked for diving in the FA Cup against Derby and also accused of diving to win a late penalty against West Bromwich Albion.

‘There are people who make mistakes who don’t pay for it,’ Mourinho added, with oblique reference to Luis Suarez, Daniel Sturridge and Liverpool, who he regards as the serial divers in the Premier League.

Mourinho was ordered from the touchline after entering the Villa Park pitch in the confusion which followed the Ramires red card.

On Monday night, the FA’s disciplinary department were still to decide whether to charge Mourinho over his second dismissal of the season or for his post-match comments.

Mourinho said it would be ‘helpful’ if Foy was not put in charge of future Chelsea games, an idea flatly rejected by the PGMOL, the governing body of the elite referees.

Foy would have been unlikely to be appointed to another Chelsea game this season so soon after Saturday. Andre Marriner will be in charge when Chelsea host Arsenal this weekend.
