Ghost goals, put-downs and touchline tantrums… will Jose Mourinho add to his many run-ins with Liverpool on Halloween?

  • Liverpool are fitting Halloween opponents for Jose Mourinho and Chelsea
  • Ghost goals and the odd horror show define his history against the Reds
  • Jurgen Klopp becomes third Kop boss to do battle with the Special One

Ghost goals, clowns, and the odd horror show – Jose Mourinho's history against Liverpool perhaps makes them fitting opponents on Halloween as speculation over his future continues to haunt the Chelsea boss.

Ever since Mourinho walked through the doors at Stamford Bridge in 2004 – and back through them in 2013 – clashes with the sides of Rafael Benitez and Brendan Rodgers have always generated flashpoints, with the Portuguese coach in his element.

At lunchtime on Saturday, Jurgen Klopp becomes a third Kop boss to do battle with the Special One. Ahead of the game, Sportsmail look back at the chequered history of Mourinho versus Liverpool.

Alonso injury sets the tone

Liverpool 0-1 Chelsea – Premier League – January 1, 2005

Chelsea were well on their way to a first title in 50 years when they travelled to Anfield midway through Mourinho's first season, where they triumphed thanks to Joe Cole's winner.

But all the post-match talk was about a leg-break for Xabi Alonso suffered in a challenge with Frank Lampard and how a Tiago handball inside the visitors' area went unpunished by Mike Riley.

Mourinho said the result showed his side 'can play 'fighting' matches like (this one) against Liverpool.' It certainly set the tone.

Mourinho's hushing gesture

Liverpool 2-3 Chelsea – League Cup – February 27, 2005

This was the first in a series of titanic clashes between Liverpool and Chelsea that would come to define Mourinho's first spell at Stamford Bridge.

Liverpool led the Carling Cup final in Cardiff from the first minute until the 79th, when Steven Gerrard put through his own net to hand Chelsea an equaliser.

Mourinho – never one to stay quiet himself – strolled down the touchline towards the red end of the Millennium Stadium with his finger to his lips.

Chelsea took home the trophy by winning out in extra time after their manager had been sent off. He later claimed the gesture was directed at the media's recent criticism rather than the fans.

The goal that wasn't/was

Liverpool 1-0 Chelsea – Champions League – May 3, 2005

It's not unusual for Mourinho to hold a grudge, but one of Anfield's greatest-ever nights in 2005 is still a moment of apparent injustice that he talks about to this day.

Luis Garcia scrambled home the only goal of this Champions League semi-final in the fifth minute, with William Gallas' battle to prevent the ball crossing the line deemed to have failed.

Television replays showed otherwise though. Ten years on, Mourinho still fumes. 'I lost a semi-final with a goal that is not a goal,' he said in an interview after winning the title in August of this year.

Jose's biggest win

Liverpool 1-4 Chelsea – Premier League – October 2, 2005

Didier Drogba was in fine form as Chelsea claimed their biggest win over Liverpool in Mourinho's time as boss.

Frank Lampard, Damien Duff, Cole and Geremi netted in a result which had fans on Merseyside feeling some sense of injustice after they had repeated penalty appeals turned down in a Champions League group clash between the two earlier that week.

Double dreams dashed

Chelsea 1-2 Liverpool – FA Cup - April 22, 2006

Another defeat against Liverpool that stung Mourinho as Benitez came out on top on the big occasion again in this FA Cup semi-final at Old Trafford.

This was a trophy that had so far evaded the Special One and goals from John Arne Riise and Luis Garcia shot down any hopes of a domestic double, too.

'You have to take chances in a game like this and we missed one in each half,' Mourinho said. 'It means we miss out on a big match and that hurts.'

More semi-final spite

Liverpool 1-0 Chelsea - Champions League - May 1, 2007

Pre-match talk ahead of another Champions League semi-final was dominated by the ongoing Mourinho-Benitez spat, but it was the latter who would come out on top in Europe once again.

Chelsea came unstuck in a penalty shoot-out after Daniel Agger cancelled out their first-leg lead on another big night at Anfield.

'We were the best team today, even against a team only playing for the Champions League,' Mourinho smouldered. 'In extra-time we were the only team who tried to win.' Not happy…

Mourinho's return re-lights the rivalry

Chelsea 2-1 Liverpool – Premier League - December 29, 2013

Back in the Barclays Premier League after six years away, Mourinho's return saw the needle between Chelsea and Liverpool that had somewhat subsided return with a bang.

Samuel Eto'o scored the winner for the Blues but should have given away a penalty when he took out Luis Suarez off the ball right in front of the outraged Liverpool supporters.

This was the season which saw Chelsea and Liverpool closest in quality and in a tight game, Mourinho's celebrations showed he recognised the significance of the result.

Gerrard's slip

Liverpool 0-2 Chelsea – Premier League - April 27, 2014

It took a lot to challenge the Champions League semi-final of 2005 as the most memorable Chelsea-Liverpool clash but somehow this season-defining moment managed it.

With Rodgers' side closing in on the title, a weakened, ill Mourinho fielded a second-string side at Anfield in what looked like a white flag of surrender against the rampant Reds.

It didn't work out that way though – Chelsea won 2-0 with Gerrard's unfortunate slip playing a big part and Mourinho was once again the touchline showman, beating his chest towards the travelling supporters as Willian wrapped up the win to derail Liverpool.

Afterwards, Mourinho said: 'I used the word with my players. I said – we are going to be the clowns, they want us to be the clowns in the circus. The circus is here. Liverpool are to be champions.' He wasn't having that...

Costa at the heart of controversy

Chelsea 1-0 Liverpool – League Cup - January 27, 2015

Capital One Cup semi-finals can tend to fall flat but this was Chelsea-Liverpool of old – full of spite, controversy and decisive moments.

Branislav Ivanovic netted the only goal while Diego Costa would later find himself banned for one of two apparent stamping incidents.

Mourinho missed Ivanovic's headed winner after being drawn into a heated row with fourth official Phil Dowd.

Gerrard again and a guard of honour

Chelsea 1-1 Liverpool – Premier League - May 10, 2015

Given the history between the club and their despised rivals' manager, it was deemed something of a humiliation for Liverpool to have to parade Mourinho's champions on to the field with a guard of honour in May.

Chelsea had already wrapped up the Premier League title and were in party mood with a 1-1 draw at Stamford Bridge failing to dampen high spirits.

Gerrard was applauded off the field after scoring as his time in England wound down, and Mourinho was effusive in his praise of the former England captain post-match. Maybe Liverpool and the Portuguese coach can get on?
