Old foes Pep Guardiola and Jose Mourinho are preparing to come face-to-face in Beijing on Monday, with City taking on United in a pre-season Manchester derby.

Sportsmail compares the impact they've both had so far... and what they plan to do next.

PEP GUARDIOLA

EARLY SIGNS

Given a rock star's welcome at the Etihad and the team already looked well-drilled in Wednesday's 1-0 defeat against Bayern Munich, despite missing 13 players.

Youngsters impressed and the established core hasn't been jettisoned as feared. Indeed, injured captain Vincent Kompany is in China to underline team spirit. 'I didn't even give it a second thought not to go,' he said.

TRANSFER MARKET

City don't blast the opposition like they used to under Sheikh Mansour. £20million midfielder Ilkay Gundogan has been the major signing with Euro 2016 performers Nolito and Oleksandr Zinchenko also in the door.

You feel a biggie is to come, possibly Everton defender John Stones at £40million. They are also chasing Schalke winger Leroy Sane. Not the big turnover predicted when Pep was announced.

QUOTABILITY

Guardiola has been keen not to inflame his rivalry with Mourinho after their chequered history at Barcelona and Real Madrid.

Instead, his most telling comment has been regarding his own players. 'I have to hug them, kick their asses,' he said on arrival.

The Spaniard will be a mixture of carrot and stick, definitely no soft touch. He's gone out of his way to assure Raheem Sterling he has got a place.

EXPECTATIONS

City hope Guardiola's arrival is the ultimate symbol that they are now truly a world-renowned club.

The Pep effect means they are Premier League title favourites ahead of the most competitive season ever but a lot will depend if he can reverse the clock and get more out of key players David Silva and Yaya Toure than Manuel Pellegrini did last season.

This is definitely the toughest task of Guardiola's career.

JOSE MOURINHO

EARLY SIGNS

Mourinho has been very businesslike since he breezed through the door. He watched United closely last season and already has a plan how to improve them.

Players are being made clear if they are in his plans or not. There will be no mass blooding of youngsters halfway through the season as Louis van Gaal did.

If anything, a 4-1 loss to Borussia Dortmund on Friday may be useful as a reality check to fans.

TRANSFER MARKET

United have moved quickly after muddling their way through the previous three summer transfer windows.

That's down to Mourinho giving the board clear instructions. Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Eric Bailly and Zlatan Ibrahimovic have already signed, and the manager wants one more stellar name, preferably £100million Paul Pogba.

Fringe players have gone, or are going. Guillermo Varela is off to Eintracht Frankfurt.

QUOTABILITY

Mourinho has played the game well so far. Aware of the status of being Manchester United manager, he has been co-operative and helpful with the media, and not foolishly controversial.

He's already shown a clarity of thinking beyond David Moyes and Van Gaal. Wayne Rooney knows he will be a forward not a midfielder.

'A No 9 or a No 10, or a number nine-and-a-half, but with me he will never be a No 6, not even a No 8,' says Mourinho.

EXPECTATIONS

Two world-class signings and the arrival of a top young defender Bailly has sent expectations soaring.

From being perceived as no-hopers last season, United are now clear second favourites for the Premier League title behind Manchester City.

Mourinho says he wants to win with style and is after every trophy. Given the love-in, defeat for an undercooked United on Friday was probably helpful, long-term.
