Didier Drogba has 'fun' scoring past former team-mate Petr Cech... as Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger jokes: 'He's still haunting us, even in the United States'

  • Arsenal beat MLS All-Stars 2-1 as part of pre-season friendlies
  • Didier Drogba scored his 16th goal in as many games against Gunners
  • Montreal Impact star took heart from scoring against ex-Chelsea keeper

Chelsea legend Didier Drogba must wish he could play Arsenal every week after the Montreal Impact striker netted his 16th goal in as many games against Arsene Wenger's side.

The 38-year-old, who left Stamford Bridge to finish his career in the US in 2015, was part of a MLS All-Stars team who played Arsenal in a pre-season friendly in San Jose on Thursday.

Drogba equalised Joel Campbell's opener on the stroke of half-time, but could not prevent defeat for the All-Star side, which included Andrea Pirlo and David Villa, after Chuba Akpom's late winner.

The Ivorian striker is well versed in upsetting his former north London rivals, although this was the first time he has scored against them with ex-team-mate Petr Cech in goal.

Speaking after the game, Drogba said: 'For me it's for fun because I scored against Petr [Cech], but the result matters more than my goal or my own performance. It's a bit disappointing to have lost this game in the last minute.

'I hate losing. So for fun, I will have fun with Petr because I scored. But he already killed me and said 'This time I give you the goal. But apart from that, no, the result I'm not happy with.'

Drogba twice tested the former Czech Republic No 1 before finding the back of the net - causing Wenger to joke that the striker is still 'haunting' his side from the other side of the Atlantic.

'He has always harmed us, and he continues. He's a winner and I think that he'll be like that until the end of his life,' Wenger said.

'At half-time, I was thinking 'He's still haunting us, even in the United States!' Drogba is a typical poacher of a goal. He can do that in the box.

WHY ARSENAL NEED A SCORER

Since Robin van Perise struck 30 Premier League goals in his final season with the club, Arsenal's top scorer in each campaign has failed to pass the 20-goal mark.

2011-12: Robin van Persie: 30 Premier League goals

2012-13: Theo Walcott: 14

2013-14: Olivier Giroud: 16

2014-15: Alexis Sanchez: 16

2015-16: Olivier Giroud: 16

Meanwhile Wenger is on the hunt for additional firepower ahead of a Premier League campaign in which the battle for top-four spots will be more fiercely contested than ever.

He said: 'At the moment I have not too many attacking options in terms of experienced players. But let's not forget we still have a few players at home.

'There are also a few players who did not play (against the MLS All-Stars), like (Santi) Cazorla. And of course (Mesut) Ozil and (Aaron) Ramsey are at home. (Olivier) Giroud is also not here.

'So we have options but we will still look outside to find one more.'
